Two months later, the Perkinses had the keys in hand. “When you walk up to the front door, you see the spiral staircase and the two walls of glass leading to the sky, and they’re inviting you to come up,” says James. “You almost fall into the conversation pit and you see the ocean, you hear it, you notice these beautiful Frank Lloyd Wright–inspired built-ins...you’re just in heaven.” Even so, the broker was quick to suggest they rip out the unconventional stairwell. Not a chance. “I’m a Porsche guy, and the house is tantamount to that,” says James. “It’s this solid thing that was beautifully done the first time. You just need to change the oil and get some new tires.”
