“We were going swimming every single day and building sandcastles. I thought these pieces were a cool way to bring that home.”
The first fault she wanted to avoid? Making the nursery too adult. “Last time I went super-neutral and it didn’t feel like a kid’s room,” says Ryan. “I wanted this space to feel fun and imaginative but refined at the same time.” So she snagged a handful of staples from the new Domino x Crate & Kids collection. The collaboration was inspired by Domino’s chief content officer’s Southern California upbringing, which struck a chord with Ryan: The family of three spent a few months in Los Angeles before settling into their new spot. “Ciel totally fell in love with the beach,” she shares. “We were going swimming every single day and building sandcastles. I thought these pieces were a cool way to bring that home.” The watercolor-like wall art above the crib evokes west coast sunsets, while the irregularly shaped Gromm Abstract Rug immediately spiced up the rental’s plain wood floors and set the scene for play. Not only is the lofty pile floor covering comfy for those still learning to crawl, but it lends ’80s-era flavor with its pastel hues and Tetris-like silhouettes and some (very necessary) soundproofing.

Ryan also realized that her four-drawer dresser wasn’t cutting it with one kid, so it definitely wouldn’t offer enough storage for two. “And we knew we needed more surface area for a changing station and storing diapering items up top,” she points out. She replaced her old wood one with the Steamer Lane 6-Drawer version. The Domino-approved piece features changeable knobs so she can customize it with a pop of color down the road. Plus at 18 inches deep and 50 inches wide, it can double as a safe changing station with the right table topper.
