that are the first three “phases” of the MCU. If you’ve been paying attention, you know sh*t is not looking good for our Avengers, and it’s likely we’ll see some of our favorites for the last time (all eyes on you, Cap and Iron Man). But how did we get here? How did we go from snarky Tony Stark building an Iron Man suit from scrap metal in an Afghan cave to a cast that’s 13 Avengers deep, including one genetically-modified, foul mouthed varmint? The Marvel timeline is convoluted and about as consistent as Scarlet Witch’s accent.
Some movies were released after ones that preceded them narratively, while Marvel retroactively changed the time frame of others, most notably Spider-Man: Homecoming. No wonder you’re confused. But we’re here to set the record straight. Just in time for us to be shattered by whatever happens in Endgame.

retreat and gets the Time Stone; T’Challa watches the throne; Thor defeats his goth sister, Hela, destroys home planet in the process; Thanos gets all six Infinity Stones and snaps away half the living universe.
The Avengers clash with Maximoff twins,
Tony and Bruce create two super-robots:
Ultron, who tries to delete humanity
and Vision, who tries to save it.
Peter Parker gets radioactive; the world turns on the Avengers, who turn on each other.
Cap and Winter Soldier clash, exposing the dark underbelly of S.H.I.E.L.D.; the Guardians of the Galaxy begrudgingly form to stop a universal threat; Peter Quill (Star-Lord) meets his dad, Ego the Celestial.
Loki steals the Tesseract from S.H.I.E.L.D., unleashing a swarm of aliens on
NYC; a traumatized Tony Stark
fights a terrorist called the Mandarin.
Thor battles the Dark Elves bent on unleashing the Aether (aka the Reality Stone).
Tony Stark is kidnapped while
weapon-testing for the Army. He creates
the first Iron Man suit to escape.
Bruce Banner becomes the Hulk, Thor lands on Earth, Black Widow collabs with Tony Stark.
Howard and Maria Stark assassinated
by the Winter Soldier.
Danvers crashes during a secret
flight test, absorbs the power of the
Tesseract. Cue Capt. Marvel.
Thanos kills families of Gamora and Nebula before adopting them as daughters.
Carol Danvers joins U.S. Air Force.
Rogers’ best friend Bucky Barnes is
imprisoned by terror org HYDRA and turned
into Winter Soldier.
Howard Stark and British agent Peggy Carter plan to form Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement and Logistics Division (S.H.I.E.L.D) .
Cap pursues a Nazi in possession of the Tesseract (containing the power of an Infinity Stone), but falls into the ocean and is
presumed dead (but isn’t). Billionaire inventor Howard Stark finds the Tesseract.
Scrawny Brooklyn boy Steve Rogers takes
some Super Soldier Serum, gets swole, and becomes Captain America.
