*UNLESS YOU’RE AN ORPHAN PUP IN PUERTO RICO...
Puppies are having the best week ever!*

See Why
Never before have kids and parents been home from school in fair weather and more in need of a family diversion than right now, meaning a puppy or kitten has all its neediest needs met, (and then some). Supervision, training, affection, playtime, a regular schedule. It’s like a spring break stay-cation that lasts, well… that lasts a lot longer than last year’s spring break did. And for other prospective adopters, working from home for weeks on end is ideal for pet adoption.
People are fostering puppies at record rates, while adoption agencies are seeing an uptick in business. Animal Care Centers of New York, a NYC-based adoption agency reports that last week, a call for volunteers to foster puppies attracted 5,000 responses, five times the number they usually receive.
ay you’re a six-week old Jack Terrier mix with a light brown patch over one eye or a purebred Airedale with energy for days, well, the COVID-19 might just be your
your ticket to a loving home. One happy consequence of the social distancing, the cancelled schools, and the nearly nationwide WFH program is that we’ve created the most ideal conditions to adopt a pet in recent history. Not kidding.

adopt a pet… mostly. These are the ups and downs of quarantine from a puppy perspective.
Jonathan Cherins, CEO of PuppySpot, a marketplace that connects vetted breeders with people looking for purebred and hybrid dogs, reports an uptick in interest. "We've been seeing tremendous interest from consumers looking to bring a puppy home,” he said. “I think the combination of time at home to train a puppy and the desire for something joyful to focus on has been driving the demand.”
Time to train. Yes, people are working, kids are learning remotely, and life is essentially carrying on in a limited way, but the amount people spending every day at home is unprecedented. The biggest obstacle to pet adoption is the absence of humans. But if you take work and school demands out of the equation, there’s always someone home to walk, feed, train your new dog.
How many TikTok videos can your kid make, really? And kids are desperate for indoor activities that don’t require virus-carrying friends.
We might need the joy. Playing with a puppy ranks up there with pizza and naps on the beach as life’s most joyous activities. “Puppies (and older dogs) are bundles of love and whether you live alone or have a family they are incredible companions,” Cherins said. “And since we take care of the logistics to get the puppy home to you, our service is more important today than ever before."
It’s spring, and so walking a new dog (even if you have to cross the street to keep distance from other dog walkers) is a perfect excuse to get out of the house and enjoy the blossoms and the fair weather.

In the meantime, though, here’s how you can help. www.thesatoproject.org/donate.
They currently have 80 pups up for adoption with no way of being transported to the people who are ready to adopt them. They need medical treatment and general care until the travel ban has been lifted and the pups can be adopted.
“Both of our standard methods of flying dogs off the
island (either privately chartered airplanes that we pack with dogs or flying them commercially through United's Petsafe program), have now been made near or completely impossible,” says Tara Steinberg, a communications associate at Sato. “United first raised their rates, but has now cancelled their Petsafe program altogether until further notice.”
The coronavirus isn’t all good news for all shelters. The Sato Project is an organization that has found homes for thousands of abandoned dogs from Puerto Rico on the American mainland. They did so, mostly, by transporting dogs via airline, which are currently restricted from flying in and out of Puerto Rico.

But the coronavirus isn’t all good news for all shelters or rescue operations. Some adoption agencies have struggled to rise to the occasion, simply because the virus is preventing them from visiting homes or interacting face to face with prospective adoptees. Also, their employees are avoiding contact with their fellow employees.
Few though are facing obstacles like the Sato Project, an organization that has found homes for thousands of abandoned dogs in Puerto Rico in mainland USA. They did so, mostly by transporting dogs by the airlines, which are restricted from flying in and out of Puerto Rico.
