years of American politics for the next hundred, but it’s impossible to refute this tactical shift: while Bush/Clinton/Obama centrists tried to negotiate through the conventional press corps, two rival factions bypassed the machinery entirely. President Trump discovered how to throw the entire media apparatus into a tizzy with a single tweet, while freshman Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez became the first elected US official to actually speak the internet’s native tongue, deftly using Twitter to marshall support and fire off send-ups of political opponents. Both churn out tweets by the thousands and have 65 million followers between them—AOC’s 5 vs. DJT’s 60. We created a tool to explore all those shots firing across the internet, using data updated daily (downloadable here for Trump’s tweets, and here for AOC’s).

Like Twitter itself, Ocasio-Cortez's feed is younger, savvier, more whimsical. @AOC’s top emoji’s include flames, flexing, fists, and sassy claps. And what social justice warrior could resist using the occasional money bag?

@RealDonaldTrump doesn’t use them often, but when he does (apart from the ubiquitous heart) he tends to steer clear of Twitter tropes. Trophies, graphs charting stock market gains, baseballs, footballs, and Christmas Trees.
