2. Why do you think it's important for people to attend Annual?
1. How does it feel to be meeting in person again?
Our goal is to meet and exceed the hopes of attendees regarding how great it will be to reunite at NACDS Annual. We will do that by living up to this meeting’s billing as a one-of-a-kind event, and offer members the chance to conduct business in an efficient and welcoming setting.
4. What can visitors expect from the Annual Meeting this year?
The 2022 NACDS Annual Meeting has a vibrant conference schedule.
The event will feature business programs with compelling speakers. The top-to-top business and strategic exchange appointments always prove valuable. The Meet the Industry program stands as an important part of the agenda that gives NACDS supplier members the opportunity to hear from industry executives about their expectations and the topics they would like to discuss.
We heard throughout the pandemic that it was the relationships that had been forged at NACDS meetings that empowered retailers and suppliers to work together to address supply chain issues and to adapt to changing shopper behavior.
Those relationships also will help to address COVID’s acceleration of change in consumer behavior, shopping preferences, technology and much more.
NACDS is committed to ensuring this Association reflects the rapid evolution and innovation of the industry in health and wellness and in meeting consumers’ needs. The NACDS Annual Meeting will offer members one-of-a-kind opportunities to connect, collaborate and discuss the future of this ever-evolving industry.
3. What are NACDS's goals for Annual and how will you achieve them?
It’s going to be fantastic! NACDS retailer and supplier members are extremely eager for the return to the NACDS Annual Meeting, and that makes it tremendously exciting.
The NACDS Regional Chain Conference in January was the first larger conference that we held since the pandemic. It was a tremendous success.
At the NACDS Annual Meeting, we anticipate strong engagement amid a strong desire to get back to in-person collaboration. It will be the industry’s reunion.
A panel of retailers on Dan Mack’s Elevation Forum discussed how team health, wholeness and empathy is going to be essential to the success of any organization going forward.
Business is human and the best organizations give the space, and heart to forge deeper relationships with teammates.
Held on Friday, the day before the NACDS Annual conference in West Palm Beach, Fla., the event included 50 health, wellness and beauty executives who gathered to talk about the future of healthy partnerships.
“Almost 3-in-4 workers have felt overwhelmed, burn-out and avoid difficult conversations with their boss,” said Mack, founder of the Chicago-based Mack Elevation, producer of the Elevation Forum, which meets three times per year to discuss industry, leadership, and organizational development growth initiatives. “Uncertainty, and change isn’t the problem, it’s the level of transparency, vulnerability and trust exhibited by leadership.”
The forum began with a discussion on how organizations are leading cultural change, building team resilience, and psychological safety. “We often believe a high performing culture is a byproduct of success,” said Mack. “It’s just the opposite. What comes first is your mindset, what follows is culture.”
Mack reminded the group that the most holistic, high performing organizations understand how to encourage simplicity, or extreme 80/20 thinking. Companies can now longer burn energy on internal politics, too many unproductive meetings and outdated ways of thinking.
In conclusion, the panel agreed that the healthiest, holistic teams are learning to respect their associates by running less frequent, smaller, shorter, simpler, and more experiential, meetings. The days of meetings with a leader in front of the room talking at team members are over, said Mack. Meetings are opportunities for co-creation, engagement, and debate.
Lindholz pointed out that while many industries had been forced away from their customers, retail pharmacies got even closer to theirs. Two out of every three COVID-19 vaccines administered were at a pharmacy. Mass testing sites were erected across the country, ensuring health equity remained a top priority for Kroger.
“We cannot do this without you, and we wouldn’t want to.”
Colleen Lindholz, president of Kroger Health, spoke on Sunday at NACDS Annual about the unique perspective she has had serving as the NACDS chair during the second year of an unprecedented pandemic.
“Our industry has bolstered the face of neighborhood health the past two years,” she said, and stressed the ongoing opportunity retail pharmacy has “to secure the freedom that comes from taking care of our health.”
As the country emerges from the pandemic, the work continues.
Lindholz credited NACDS’ work for 70 state bills that are working to expand pharmacy scope of practice. “We accomplished way more than the American people thought we would,” she said.
NACDS has documented lessons learned as well as recommendations, which will be critical to our future, she said, and predicted that data sharing will become the norm.
“The future of health care is personalized, not generalized,” she said.
Lisa Paley, head of GSK Consumer Health, U.S. and North America, opened the Business Program I on Sunday by welcoming attendees in the Ponce de Leon Ballroom at The Breakers during the NACDS Annual Meeting in Palm Beach, Fla., after a two year hiatus due to the pandemic.
Paley, who is also vice chair-NACDS retail advisory board, highlighted the themes of purpose and humanity, and spoke about GSK's work around health inclusivity and how healthcare services are not always accessible or available.
"Healthcare support largely relies on people actively seeking it out and this is not always a priority for those trying to just pay rent and keep food on their tables," she said.
Paley also addressed GSK's transition to becoming Haleon in the next few months. "As you may be aware, in a matter of months, GSK Consumer Healthcare is expected to de-merge from our pharma parent company and once de-merged will become known as Haleon, a world-leading standalone consumer healthcare business" with the purpose of delivering "better everyday health with humanity."
Throughout her talk, she wove the same themes of purpose and humanity and how they mattered, especially during this moment of self-care in the country.
"This is why purpose matters, and this is why our industry matters. We collectively have the power to make everyone feel like someone special."
Rodney McMullen, CEO of Kroger, shared key learnings from the past couple of years as he spoke with Kroger Health president Colleen Lindholz on Sunday at NACDS Annual.
McMullen also spoke of the industry’s push for pharmacists to be able to treat patients when necessary and his conversations with Dr. Ashish Jha, the COVID-19 response coordinator for the White House.
“What I tell our team is, I would not have been greedy enough to ask for what they delivered,” sharing how proud he is of what the industry has done for the COVID-19 pandemic.
McMullen spoke up Kroger’s ability to partner with other retailers across the world, including several of the countries that were ahead of the United States upon the virus outbreak, and shared what they were doing to keep their associates safe when much wasn’t yet known about the novel coronavirus. “We employed more than 30 changes to keep our people safe,” he said.
McMullen told Lindholz that the company decided to share all of its internal documents of what it was doing — things that worked and things that didn’t. More than 10,000 small companies have downloaded those documents, he said.
“The walls were knocked down,” Lindholz said, which reflected a different level of engagement than the industry has ever seen before.
“Less people will be dying if people can be treated for it,” said McMullen, citing the fact that there are still 400 people dying of the disease today.

Closing Day Highlighted By Major Predictions for 2022 and Beyond
Sanjay Gupta gave the keynote address at the NACDS Annual Meeting on Sunday, saying he jumped at the opportunity to come celebrate the important role industry members were able to play during the COVID-19 pandemic.
As a patient as well as a physician, Gupta explained how, despite spending $4 trillion a year on health care in the United States, we haven’t gotten the user experience part of it quite right. But for him, “something clicked” when he received his COVID-19 vaccine from his neighborhood pharmacy. “It felt like a cottage industry, with a neighborhood feel, like I’ve seen in other countries.”
Gupta said that this felt particularly remarkable given there wasn’t really a precedent for this sort of thing, since the virus was indeed novel, and something extraordinary.
“We were collectively experiencing something for the first time,” he said. “There’s a lesson there. It takes humility to say, ‘I don’t know.’ We like certainty, but it can lead you down the wrong path.”
Gupta referenced his latest book, “World War C: Lessons from the Covid-19 Pandemic and How to Prepare for the Next One” where he explains that we should expect more of this unknown. As the world enters the pandemic era, he stressed the need to begin to work on things in advance, not in moments of crisis. “It’s not going to prevent viruses from making the jump, but it will keep it from doing what this one did,” he said, predicting that the United States will need to spend $10 billion a year to become pandemic-proof.
Gupta said that the future of health care has probably changed as a result of this pandemic in ways industry members haven’t fully realized. “With this will come great expectations,” he said. “I’m increasingly confident that’s something we can meet.”
NACDS president Steve Anderson welcomed attendees back to its annual meeting after a three-year hiatus.
“And since that time, just look at what you have done!” he said. “Your companies and your teams have sustained consumers, saved Americans and restored the nation.”
Anderson spoke about pharmacies leveraging NACDS — the industry’s trade association — as a force multiplier. Working at both the federal and state levels, pharmacies were able to take a front-row seat in the pandemic response.
“From day one of the pandemic, we urged state governments to put patients over paperwork,” he said. “And it would not have happened unless pharmacies made their case twice — with the Trump and Biden administrations.”
Dubbing himself a “radical associationist,” Anderson explained that NACDS serves as the collective and collaborative will of its membership. “Associations play a critical role in our society — and in our democracy,” he said. “And there is no better illustration of that than NACDS, and particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
As industry members take the lessons learned from the pandemic and the results achieved for the American people, Anderson encouraged attendees to keep pressing ahead to see what more we can do — together.
