Ways to
Future-Proof Your POS
and
From spills, bangs and bumps to high-heat environments and high-touch users, restaurants demand a lot from their POS — and that’s just what’s happening on the outside.
Explore these five helpful tips for your POS investment that can enhance sales and productivity for years to come.
1
Build your POS around responsive, easily adaptable hardware.
POS printers can act as integration hubs for the tech devices of today and tomorrow. A single printer has the ability to facilitate the restaurant’s mobile POS while also supporting the system’s expansion and future technologies.
2
Improve
productivity

printing.
Your printer should be compatible with mobile POS hardware, in sync with printing devices that can be worn on a belt or kept in a pocket.
• Optimized for high-speed throughput
• Versatile and compact
• Lightweight, but durable enough to withstand a mobile environment
• Able to support right-side-up printing for easy reading
Use kitchen/bar receipt printers that are:
• Energy-efficient devices
• Paper-saving features
• Low intervention with high-yield ink cartridges
• Liner-free labels that eliminate waste
4
Invest in efficient products that minimize the consumption of media, ink and power.
• Restaurant table
• Cashier counter
• Over the internet
• Drive-thru window
• Kiosk service
3
With tools that interact in the cloud, orders are integrated with the restaurant’s entire POS hardware system, creating efficiencies from front of house to back office, no matter where the sale originates.
5
Choose a forward-thinking manufacturer that provides integrated technology across multiple functions.
• Label printers
• Thermal label printers

The message is clear:
Ignore BOPIS at your own peril.
Customers now have the tools to order their food from anywhere, at anytime, with the expectation that they can pick it up in minutes. Restaurants that allow their POS to lag may not survive the rigors of the new economy. Restaurants that corral the latest technology and put it to good use can fulfill those customer expectations and secure profitability far into the future.

Meeting the BOPIS Challenge With Smart POS
Crucial to the successful adoption of BOPIS is the ability to sync the online ordering process with the restaurant’s POS tools.
Ideally, BOPIS lends itself to an efficient workflow.
But any step along the way can be impeded by unreliable tech.
A successful restaurant will invest in forward-looking POS tools that accommodate integrated technology across multiple functions:
A printer that acts as a hub to facilitate POS throughout the building, and has the ability to support future technologies
Thermal label printers for reliable, efficient product labeling to ensure every order is fulfilled correctly
Epson’s OmniLink TM-L90plus-i Liner Free Compatible Printer provides advanced connectivity, prints label or receipts and features server-direct printing for online orders.
Easily integrate online ordering and support BOPIS applications
Kitchen video screens for accurate order prep
Epson manufactures future-proofed, flexible POS hardware that can help deliver on the promise of BOPIS. Smart investment in the right POS solutions can help any restaurant stay ahead of the competition.
The online ordering service should deliver uniform, understandable instructions to
the kitchen.
Less time and energy is spent on plate presentation once the meal is prepared.
The delivery of the order should be swift and accurate, fulfilling the request that the customer selected on their own device.

For the restaurant industry, BOPIS has become a staple strategy. Online and app-based ordering can be leveraged to increase the average order size, sustain customer loyalty and generate operational efficiency.
When eateries adopt BOPIS, positive results tend to follow:
The industry’s current climate only accelerates the need for a smooth BOPIS operation:
Greater exposure, with more people visiting their website & store
Reduced payroll expenses, since fewer staff are needed for online transactions
Less time devoted to taking orders by phone, freeing up staff to perform other duties more efficiently
An uptick in repeat customers, especially when e-ordering becomes a smooth experience
of takeout customers choose their restaurant based on the ease of online ordering.*

Your POS technology needs to remain in sync with the online ordering process. If a business selects unreliable POS hardware, or attempts to use older tech that can’t support the latest BOPIS demands, the service will break down. When you future-proof your POS with solid, flexible tools, it ensures efficiency throughout the process and eases the integration of new technologies as they become available.

The customer arrives at the restaurant; and the staff cannot find their order, or the order is unavailable due to a mix-up in fulfillment — unless it’s down to simple human error, these problems are generally due to a disorganized POS process. Using efficient, user-friendly POS tools is important. As is the need to create a clear routine for the staff: there should be designated counter space for packaging BOPIS orders, and a clearly labeled front-of-house area reserved for BOPIS pick-ups.
X
Make sure there’s enough staff to assist customers — takeout customers expect to complete their transaction upon their arrival, so efficiency is paramount. And don’t allow workers to place less value on BOPIS fulfillment than on tableside service, if you want those online customers to remain loyal.

BOPIS Across All of Retail

In many retail categories, “Buy Online, Pick Up In Store” is quickly becoming one of the most popular ways to shop. Each year, an increasing percentage of consumers are availing themselves of the service. A recent survey* by Doddle found that 68% of respondents had used BOPIS multiple times.
The convenience of getting products immediately and avoiding shipping costs is important enough that it can determine where many consumers make their purchase.
And once consumers physically arrive in a store, they often make additional purchases, whether from impulse or need.
Many retailers believe BOPIS will soon become the standard way to shop, combining the convenience of shopping online with the timeliness of picking up an order in-store.
According to the survey* by Doddle, 50% of respondents decided where to buy online based on which retailers allowed them to pick up in store.

While the in-store experience is still valued, there is a world of retail being driven by omnichannel technology — new tools that allow retailers to provide their products and services via multiple platforms, prompting customers to expect greater convenience and quicker delivery.
The restaurant industry
is no exception.
One of the most important strategies for restaurant owners has been the embrace of BOPIS (or “buy online, pick up in store”). For many, BOPIS has provided a wonderful new way to serve more customers and increase profits. But it also creates new challenges that, if not managed properly, can generate unwanted headaches.
