From innovative concepts to making outdoor rooms a reality — top decking suppliers share challenges and successes.
THE 2022
FEATURING
A great deck is judged by what customers see: clean lines, rich color, a smooth walking surface, and the promise of seasons spent outdoors. But for dealers and builders, the real story runs deeper. The difference between a call-back and a lifelong customer often lies in the parts no one notices at first glance — the fasteners, the framing, the chemistry of the boards, and the protective systems built into every layer.

2026 FIELD GUIDE

THE
Across the decking category, suppliers are shining a brighter light on these hidden components. Their message to dealers is simple: long-term satisfaction is engineered, not accidental.
Deck builders are thinking far beyond the standard 12-by-12 platform. At Deck Expo in Las Vegas, pros described a growing appetite for sophisticated, multi-dimensional outdoor living spaces during an Outdoor Living Stage session titled The Art of Selling Luxury Outdoor Living.
“Figure out what luxury decks mean to you,” said Andy Henley of Hen-House Decks in Uniontown, Ohio. “A luxury deck is also a unique deck.”
"Figure out what a deck means to you. A luxury deck is also a unique deck."
Andy Henley Hen-House Decks Uniontown, OH
Henley, known for highly creative builds, joined Tommy Holstein of Solid Ground in St. Louis and Mike Mitchell of Mitchell Construction in Chicagoland to outline features that elevate projects into luxury territory.
Glass railing ranked high on the list. “Glass railing comes with the highest price of options, because it’s an incredible look,” Holstein said. Mitchell added that frameless glass rails and privacy screens can instantly transform an average deck and open the door to additional upgrades.
Lighting is another differentiator. “When you drive through a neighborhood and see all dark houses, except for one house that’s all lit up, that house draws attention,” Holstein said. “It’s the same thing with outdoor living projects.”
Some luxury investments are hidden. Henley emphasized the importance of premium substructures. “Why put filet mignon on a paper plate?” he said.
Looking ahead, Henley sees more collaboration and technology-driven design, helping homeowners create personalized outdoor environments. Custom inlays — which he calls “deck tattoos” — are one way to add signature style.
Fasteners are among the smallest line items in a deck project, but they carry outsized responsibility. Corrosion, expansion, and temperature swings test every screw and connector long after the ribbon-cutting moment. Dealers who stock reliable fastening systems are, in effect, protecting their reputation along with the structure.
The underlying message resonates with today’s deck customer: durability is not an upgrade; it’s an expectation.
While fasteners hold a deck together, structural components determine how that deck performs over time. Warping beams, inconsistent spans, and moisture intrusion can undermine even the most attractive surface materials.
Pacific Wood Technology (PWT) points dealers toward laminated veneer lumber as a modern alternative to traditional framing lumber. PWT LVL is engineered for dimensional consistency, predictable strength, and long-span performance. The manufacturing process aligns thin veneers with fibers running the full length of the beam, using ultrasonic testing to select materials and continuously monitored assembly methods to ensure uniformity.
If the frame is the skeleton of a deck, the board is its public face. Composite decking continues to gain traction as homeowners seek environmentally responsible, low-maintenance solutions. NewTechWood, a pioneer in wood-plastic composite technology since 2004, sees sustainability and performance moving in tandem.
The company’s UltraShield decking illustrates how far composite technology has advanced. Its co-extruded cap forms a weather-resistant shield around all four sides of the board, fused to the core under high heat without adhesives or environmentally harmful chemicals. That 360-degree protection is designed to guard against mold, mildew, stains, fading, cracking, cupping, and swelling.
Inside, the composite core is built from recycled materials and dense recycled hardwood and softwood fibers, creating a product that is both durable and 100% recyclable. For dealers serving increasingly eco-conscious customers, the appeal is twofold: reduced maintenance for the homeowner and a sustainability story that resonates at the point of sale.
Deck projects increasingly blur the line between structural necessity and visual statement. Decorative hardware is no longer hidden — it is celebrated. Simpson Strong-Tie’s Outdoor Accents lines illustrate how connectors and fasteners can function as design elements in their own right.
Selling the invisible
In the end, the best decks succeed quietly. They endure storms, temperature swings, and years of use without demanding attention. And that, suppliers argue, is the highest compliment a customer can give: satisfaction with the parts they never had to think about.
Taken together, these innovations and many others reflect a broader shift in decking: the industry is teaching customers to value what they cannot immediately see. Dealers play a central role in that education. By highlighting engineered framing, corrosion-resistant fasteners, capped composite technology, and design-forward hardware, retailers elevate the conversation from price per board to performance per decade.

SaberDrive: Tech That Bites.
That’s why Midwest Fastener launched its BuildRight Contractor Pack line of deck screws – promoted as a screw that has everything a deck builder needs, and nothing he doesn’t.
And while value is often in the eye of the beholder, Midwest Fastener is finding ways to deliver on multiple fronts.
“There is a real demand on the job site for products that bring the same level of performance, but offer much more efficient installation,” Thies said. “That's been an interesting trend to watch, and will continue to be.”
Midwest is also bringing new products into the mix. The company expanded its 316 stainless deck screw line – a line that performs well in tough, coastal areas. “It’s great for saltwater environments, and it has maximum corrosion resistance,” he said. The line expansion is expected to bolster its already robust corrosion-resistance offering as extreme weather plays out in increased frequency.
The team at Midwest Fastener, the Kalamazoo, Mich.-based company that distributes its products coast-to-coast and beyond, has surveyed the field, felt the pulse of the industry, and recognized an unambiguous conclusion about the market.
That conclusion: Value will continue to reign in 2025.
“That’s been the big one,” said Nick Thies, category manager for construction fasteners and a 12-year veteran of Midwest Fastener. “That story hasn’t changed very much for us since about a year ago.”
“The market really seemed to demand value,” Thies said. “ They just wanted more, and we were able to give that to them. And we've seen that line really take off, and we’re continuing to watch that trend.”
The decking business is a “crucial, really important” part of Midwest Fastener. And Thies explains here how the company plans to increase its market share in the decking business heading into the heart of the deck season.
“So, taking our structural line, which would be our SaberDrive Platinum brand, tying that into our deck screw line.. Because very often those go together when you're remodeling your deck, you need some structural fasteners to fasten your ledger board. You need to put your multi-ply beams together with something.
A major theme for Midwest Fastener is the interconnection of decking, construction and a variety of fasteners.
“So bringing those products together that have kind of lived side by side for a while, tie them into a sort of packaged solution for the dealer and —through the dealer — for the end user. That’s been a real focus."
“We're definitely your holistic fastener solution, I would say for a deck or really for any other project," Thies said. "That's definitely the message that we're trying to get across coming into show season this year.”
“We’re thinking of it as combining some of our different products together into one solution,” he said. “So if I look across my brand portfolio, I've got everything from metal screws to concrete fasteners to wood screws. And tieing that all together has been a major focus coming into this selling season.
In the heavy construction and deck industry, performance is measured by efficiency, structural integrity, and long-term durability. SaberDrive and SaberDrive Platinum are engineered to meet these rigorous demands, providing professional builders with fasteners that eliminate common jobsite failure points and exceed standard building codes. For the professional, these fasteners represent the difference between a project that simply passes inspection and one that stands as a testament to quality craftsmanship.
Traditional screws rely on a wedge-action thread that creates significant friction, leading to high driving torque, split wood, and excessive battery drain. SaberDrive utilizes a serrated thread design that functions as a series of miniature blades that cut through wood fibers rather than crushing them, effectively "sawing" through the lumber during the drive.
Reduced Driving Torque: By minimizing friction, SaberDrive allows for faster installation and significantly extends the battery life of cordless impact drivers. This efficiency is critical for large-scale deck framing where thousands of fasteners are driven in a single day. No Pre-drilling: The aggressive tip and serrated threads eliminate the need for pilot holes in most wood types, including dense pressure-treated lumber. This prevents splitting even near the ends of boards, maintaining the structural and aesthetic integrity of the lumber. Anti-Cam-Out Drive: Engineered for high-torque environments, our drive recesses ensure maximum bit engagement to prevent stripping and surface scarring. This "no-slip" performance protects the bit, the tool, and the finish of the premium lumber.
As deck designs move toward larger, more complex multi-level structures, the need for certified structural fasteners has become paramount. SaberDrive Platinum is not a standard fastener; it is a code-compliant structural screw designed for a massive leap forward in labor efficiency.
Advanced Thread Technology: The SaberDrive Advantage
Key Technical Benefits:
SaberDrive Platinum: ICC-ES Certified Structural Performance
The Professional Standard: SaberDrive & SaberDrive Platinum Engineering
ICC-ES Certification: Platinum fasteners carry comprehensive ICC-ES reports, providing the technical data required by engineers and building inspectors for structural load-bearing connections. This certification removes the guesswork from the inspection process. Lag Bolt Replacement: These screws offer the sheer strength and withdrawal resistance of a 1/2" lag bolt but install in a fraction of the time with no pre-drilling required. A task that once required a socket set and significant physical effort can now be completed with a standard impact driver. Application Versatility: The Platinum line is ideal for critical connections, including ledger board attachments, post-to-beam connections, and the mounting of stair stringers to the rim joist.
Structural Specifications:
1,500-Hour Salt Spray Testing: While standard galvanized fasteners often fail prematurely in coastal or high-moisture environments, the XL1500 coating is tested to endure over 1,500 hours of salt spray with no red rust. Chemical Compatibility: The coating is fully approved for use in ACQ and all other treated lumber environments, ensuring the fastener will not degrade or lose sheer strength over the life of the deck. Long-Term Integrity: This barrier prevents "rust bleeding" into premium lumber and protects the internal core of the fastener from atmospheric rot.
Corrosion Protection Standards:
A high-end deck is judged by its finish. Both SaberDrive and SaberDrive Platinum fasteners are designed to be as visually clean as they are structurally sound. Each screw head across both lines features integrated nibs that allow the fastener to self-countersink with surgical precision. This ensures a flush, professional finish in both natural hardwoods and modern composite materials without the "mushrooming" or splintering effect common with inferior hardware. Whether you are using SaberDrive for decking or SaberDrive Platinum for structural framing, the result is a deck surface that is safe for bare feet and visually seamless.
Precision Aesthetics and Finishing
SaberDrive and SaberDrive Platinum represent a fundamental shift in fastening technology—moving away from generic hardware toward precision-engineered structural tools. For the professional, these fasteners provide the speed required for profitable projects and the certified strength required for lasting reputations. By choosing SaberDrive, you are investing in the longevity of the structure and the safety of the homeowner. Build with the confidence that your structure is anchored by the industry’s most advanced and reliable steel.

We Build Our Products Like Your Reputation Depends On It.
Your reputation is built one order, one delivery and one recommendation at a time. That’s why at PWT, we build our products the same way you build trust with your customers: deliberately, layer by layer, with no shortcuts.
But strong products are only part of what matters. What truly sets PWT apart is how we show up for our partners.
Because the treatment penetrates the entire wood member uniformly across its cross-section, performance is consistent from end to end. The process adds no VOCs or mineral solvents and preserves the full strength of the wood fiber. While others have pursued similar technologies, PWT Treated LVL is the first to make it work at scale. For dealers, that means a premium framing solution you can recommend with confidence that reduces callbacks, supports long-term customer satisfaction, and strengthens your reputation with every build.
This isn’t treatment applied after the fact. It’s protection built in from the start.
As premium decking boards continue to raise the bar for performance and aesthetics, the framing beneath them can’t be an afterthought. PWT Treated™ LVL helps dealers and builders deliver a complete system that performs as well below the deck surface as it looks above it.
Beyond Treated LVL, PWT offers a full portfolio of engineered wood solutions designed to support dealers across residential and light commercial applications. PWT LVL provides straight, uniform structural performance. PWT I-Joists deliver reliable floor systems across long spans. And the PWT Billet Beam brings strength and efficiency to demanding structural conditions. Together, these solutions give dealers a resilient, whole-home offering backed by competitive pricing and a nationwide network of independent distributors who deliver when and where products are needed.
PWT is rooted in innovation by engineering wood products that raise expectations for what decking can be. At the center of that commitment is PWT Treated™ LVL: the world’s first manufacturer-treated laminated veneer lumber designed for exterior use.
PWT Treated LVL is the only preservative-treated LVL during the manufacturing process. Treating the wood as it’s made allows it to maintain its strength, stiffness and uniformity while protecting against rot, decay and insects. The result is a straight, wane-free product that’s lighter than pressure-treated lumber of the same size, making it easier to handle, install and stand behind. And it’s all backed by a 25-year lifetime limited warranty.

“We always recommend Deckorators products made with Surestone technology to our clients because they’re backed by the industry’s best warranties.” —Michael S., Contractor
“Absolutely love this decking. My new deck has never looked better! The color is beautiful and without having the upkeep of regular wood – even better!” —Kat G., Homeowner
If you’ve worked in the industry for more than a decade, you know the first composite decking boards solved wood rot but brought new headaches: they often looked artificial, retained heat, became slippery when wet, and faded quickly in direct sun. These early products fell short in both appearance and durability, failing to meet the needs of professionals and homeowners.
TimberTech’s leadership has redefined industry expectations for composite and PVC decking, combining authentic wood aesthetics with unmatched durability and low maintenance. By focusing on real-world innovation, TimberTech empowers building professionals to confidently recommend products that deliver long-term value, reliability, and customer satisfaction.
TimberTech revolutionized decking aesthetics by introducing composite and PVC boards with remarkably authentic wood looks. Innovative color-blending and grain technologies give their decking deep, natural hues, textured surfaces, and unique board-to-board variation that closely replicates the complexity and appeal of high-end hardwoods. By perfecting natural hues and realistic textures, TimberTech made it possible for professionals and homeowners to enjoy the look of premium hardwoods with lasting durability and easier maintenance.
TimberTech recognized these early shortcomings and took a leading role in driving the industry forward. With continuous investment in research and a focus on real-world performance, TimberTech revolutionized PVC technology compared to earlier composites, creating decking that stays cooler, offers better slip resistance, is inherently fire resistant, and authentically replicates the look of real wood . By eliminating organic material and addressing key issues like fading, heat build-up, and traction, TimberTech’s innovations not only improved their own products but also set new standards across the entire market.
The Evolution of Decking: From Plastic-y Past to Premium Performance
TimberTech’s engineering breakthroughs have also raised the bar for durability and moisture resistance in composite decking. By pioneering four-sided protective capping and tackling issues like rot, mold, and mildew, TimberTech pushed composite and PVC decking far beyond traditional wood. By focusing on real-world challenges, TimberTech creates boards that provide homeowners the look they love and the performance they expect, without ongoing staining or sealing.
Moisture Resistance: TimberTech revolutionized the industry by introducing four-sided protective capping, shielding every side—even within the grooves—from water. This key innovation protects against rot, mold, and mildew, ensuring lasting deck beauty and strength.
TimberTech continues to advance sustainability by engineering decking with high levels of recycled content, transforming potentially landfill-bound waste into long-lasting, high-performance boards. Through the FULL-CIRCLE® PVC Recycling Program, end-of-life PVC, vinyl, and other construction scraps are collected and remade into new outdoor living products.
Engineering for Durability
TimberTech’s proprietary Advanced PVC is at the forefront of decking innovation. “We saw an opportunity to redefine what decking could be—moving from basic composites to Advanced PVC that truly replicates wood's look and lasts for decades,” says Patrick Barnds, TimberTech Senior Vice President of Product Development. As one of the few brands to offer PVC options, TimberTech also stands out with unique features like multiwidth boards, giving homeowners and professionals greater design flexibility to create custom looks that competitors can’t match.
TimberTech’s focus on innovation benefits everyone involved. For building professionals, lighter and easier-to-handle Advanced PVC boards streamline installation and reduce jobsite waste. The reliability of the product, backed by industry-leading warranties that can extend up to a lifetime, allows pros to build their reputation on quality and trust, while minimizing callbacks from customers.
For homeowners, the benefits are clear: a beautiful, low-maintenance outdoor living space. They get a deck they’ll never have to sand, stain, or seal, with an authentic wood look that lasts. By raising the bar for aesthetics, durability, and comfort, TimberTech has transformed what a deck can be, delivering long-term value for all.
