The Market for Kiosks is Growing Rapidly
The global interactive kiosk market size is expected to reach USD 52.74 million by 2030, registering a CAGR of 7.1% over the forecast period. Restaurants’ adoption of the technology is one factor impacting the growth. They’re upgrading POS systems to achieve tighter integration with other operating systems, which is critical to meeting customer demand for omnichannel experiences including self-service kiosks — and the number of restaurants doing that to incorporate kiosks is increasing.
in the 2023 Hospitality Technology POS Software Trends Report identified kiosks when asked, “What Features & Functionalities Are Driving Your POS Purchases?” — up from 23% in the 2022 report.
By 2026, the U.S. market for self-service kiosks is expected to grow to
Diners Desire Self-Service Options
Consumers are embracing self-service options when dining out, and kiosks are among the top restaurant technologies that consumers demand. And that means restaurants that don’t offer those options are likely to lose out to competitors who do.
of customers
said they would be more willing to visit a restaurant if self-service kiosks were available.
Customers who have ordered using kiosks are happy with the experience the self-service technologies restaurants provide delivered.
of respondents
When they can enter their own order specifications and send them directly to the kitchen, accuracy and speed of service are increased, resulting in higher customer satisfaction…and that leads to bigger tickets, too!
Ticket sizes, on average, are 12% to 20% higher when customers order from a self-service kiosk rather than a cashier.
Self-ordering kiosks are known to generate orders up to 30% higher in value than orders placed in person. Customers revel in the privacy and freedom afforded by these devices and tend to select more items. Upselling and cross-selling are also more successful on self-ordering kiosks.
The data produced by self-ordering kiosks gives restaurateurs important insights into their business. With this information planning becomes more sensible and projections more accurate. The figures can also guide menu tweaks and promotions.
The Benefits Extend to the Bottom Line
Kiosks and the Landscape of Labor
Kiosks may be crucial to filling gaps created by the labor shortage — and increase the ROI for the purchase of the machines.
Self-ordering kiosks can help eliminate the need for employees to accept orders and process payments. Customizations in kiosk functionality make such kiosks easily adaptable to any category of restaurant. For self-service set-ups, diners can place their orders at the kiosk, make payment and then collect their trays or parcels from the allocated counter or window. If patrons are dining in, they can simply include a table number when they place their order so that the food can be brought to where they are seated.
Employees become more efficient once self-ordering kiosks are installed. A kiosk can generally take on the role of 1.5 cashiers. Once free of the duties of accepting orders and processing payments, staff can focus on other important tasks, including marketing, customer service and inventory. Because kiosks can take orders quickly, there is no need for extra staff during peak times.
