The pandemic was a turning point for grocery, with e-commerce taking off and customers demanding more from in-store experiences, loyalty perks and overall satisfaction. Now that these shakeups are here to stay, all eyes are on customer-facing tech – fast delivery, BOPIS convenience and precision-based, personalized recommendations.
It’s in the backend, however, that these technologies can truly start to transform operations, with models like scan-based trading (SBT) and consignment creating a more seamless experience for grocers and, by extension, their customers.
While shoppers value innovation in stores themselves, almost half express concern that tech is replacing humans in grocery stores, and 32% say that they value having a balance of tech and in-store staff, according to Progressive Grocer’s 2024 Grocery Tech Trends Report. This highlights an opportunity to strengthen back-end tech stacks, enabling staff to focus on innovation and delivering exceptional customer experiences.
