As Product of the Year USA prepared to unveil its 2021 honorees, Mike Nolan, CEO of Product of the Year, sat down with Joe Territo, executive vice president of content for EnsembleIQ, to discuss how the honorees are selected, how they reflect shopper needs and lifestyles, and what it’s like to have a bird’s eye view of product innovation around the globe.

Product of the Year accepts entries every year from consumer packaged goods that demonstrate innovation and were launched within the previous year. Entered products are then placed into specific categories such as food, beverages, personal care, household care, etc. with a product then being chosen as a winner in its category through a nationally representative online study conducted by Kantar.

Joe Territo: Hello everyone! I’m Joe Territo, executive vice president of content for EnsembleIQ. We are the leading provider of business intelligence for grocery, drug, convenience and product marketing professionals. Our platforms include Progressive Grocer, Convenience Store News, Drug Store News, and Path to Purchase IQ–among many others. Today I’m very pleased to be interviewing Mike Nolan, CEO of Product of the Year, about the 41 consumer products that Product of the Year USA has recognized as the most innovative in their categories for 2021. Thank you for joining us today, Mike! Mike Nolan: You’re welcome. It’s a pleasure to be here. Joe Territo: Now, I know Product of the Year is not a contest–that it’s a research-rooted, broad consumer panel evaluation of many consumer products, to identify the most truly innovative offerings in each of your categories. Can you tell our audience more about how Product of the Year has worked with the global research company Kantar to rigorously evaluate which consumer products are your 2021 U.S. standouts? Mike Nolan: Research is at the heart of everything we do. We see ourselves almost as an America’s Got Talent for supermarket products. Kantar independently finds those 40,000 individuals coast-to-coast, and they vote on the products entered into the awards--using criteria such as innovation, recommendation and satisfaction. And there’s just nothing more meaningful than a recommendation from a fellow shopper to help you find the best, most innovative new products on the shelves. It’s that relatively simple independent process that allows Product of the Year to flourish in 40 countries around the world. But most crucially, it allows manufacturers, retailers and so importantly the shoppers to trust us. Joe Territo: I see Mike that many of your 2021 U.S. honorees exemplify larger industry trends. Perhaps it’s no coincidence that in this age of, shall I say, heightened sanitation–the products you are honoring include a sanitizing spray, and hygienic laundry pods. As use of cannabis and its derivatives becomes more prevalent, your honorees include three CBD products. You’ve also selected a host of beauty, personal care, wellness, food, and pet care products in an era when most of us are spending much more time at home. Can you tell us about how the 2021 Product of the Year honorees in the United States reflect the needs of how we’re living today? Mike Nolan: One of the great strengths of Product of the Year is that we react to the market every year. The manufacturers put forward the products, and so we reflect the trends really quickly, and we’re always stunned how fast those trends emerge. So, obviously right now, everybody is struggling through this horrific pandemic. The first thing to note is how we saw manufacturers stepping up, just like you mentioned there, trying to do their small part to provide shoppers with what they wanted, and needed. We saw that people do definitely still want new, original products–perhaps even more so now that they’re stuck at home. So we’re excited with people like Schwarzkopf and Remington producing new home care hair-looking-after kits, more sophisticated oral care in the home from Crest, and from Colgate. But other longer-term trends were also reflected. Free-from and sustainability–they just aren’t going anywhere as trends, nor should they. Across not just the most obvious areas, such as laundry–where we had all free-from and clear–but also Mucinex, which is children’s free-from cold care, in the health sector. What’s interesting is even in this awful pandemic, 70 percent of people still want and pay more for new and original products. Joe Territo: Your point about consistency in trends from year-to-year makes sense to me, as I attended last year’s awards event, and I did notice some consistency between who was honored last year and who was honored this year relevant to what’s happening in the marketplace. Now, Product of the Year is not just in the U.S. You are an international operation performing consumer research and selecting new annual honorees in countries around the globe. It must be fascinating to have a global view of product innovation trends, consumer responses, and how they vary from one country to another. Could you please tell us what trends you are seeing globally, and which of them are most important for the North American product marketers and retailers in our audience to have on their radar? Mike Nolan: I guess what I find fascinating in a global sense is how much is similar rather than now much is different. Families all still want to have healthy, well-fed kids who have clean clothes to go to school in. That’s the same from Mumbai to New York. It’s why one of the great staples of CPG advertising is the clean white shirt on your way to school. And that unites everybody around the world. So that insight is global, but it’s necessarily delivered in a local way. For example, there’s a huge trend we see in authenticity, especially in food and drink. Back to the old, back to the local, but delivered in a modern setting. What I mean by that is people increasingly celebrating and embracing the real, but looking for it on a local level. So, all over the world, people are looking for real Greek yogurt, for real Indian curry flavors and recipes–but they want them delivered locally. And also I think something which is being picked up all around the globe, and I would suggest is inexorable, really, is the rise of private-label. And the pandemic has only just increased that, all around the world. And this is moving beyond private-label just for food and drink. This is moving private-label into the aisles of every single supermarket around the country. So, there’s a couple of trends there that we see globally coming out, but that we think are hugely relevant in the North American Market as well. Joe Territo: Yeah, we’re very aware here at EnsembleIQ of the rise of private-label and the growing sophistication of the private-label marketplace through our publication Store Brands. Mike this has all been very informative. It’s always a pleasure to talk to you, and Product of the Year, and it’s always enlightening. We greatly appreciate your insights, and congratulations on identifying new and exciting products that no doubt will inspire, as I mentioned, the product marketers in our audience, and draw interest from the retailers we serve most especially. We’re looking forward to more to come, as later this year you’ll make the turn into fielding entries for your 2022 program, and you’re probably already thinking ahead to that.
