Despite an encouraging upward trend in sales in 2021 and positive momentum so far this year, the convenience store industry’s single-store
and small chain operators (2-20 stores) still have plenty of challenges keeping them up at night. Our third-annual State of the Small Operator special report assesses the performance of these smaller players vs. the overall industry, and spotlights the ways in which they are maneuvering around the obstacles standing in their way.
Tying in with the ongoing labor challenges, staff training and retention programs is their second-highest investment priority, cited by more
than half of this year’s study participants.
