GROWTH BRANDS
Heineken contributes its 2019 growth to investing in its brands, its sustainability agenda and its digital transformation. The brewer acquired a few companies in Poland, Ecuador and Portugal, as well as a minority stake in craft breweries in France and the Netherlands. Perhaps most strategic was the start of a new venture joining forces with the largest beer producer in China. Coupled with listening to consumer demands, Heineken answered the call for “low and no” products with a larger portfolio of 348-line extensions in 123 brands. It also inked a deal to become the Official Beer Partner of UEFA EURO 2020, and in a separate agreement extended its partnership by another three years, including global TV and digital integrated marketing campaigns.

As the Christian Dior group was formed through successive alliances between LVMH and Bernard Arnault (in association with a group of investors), it has naturally benefitted from the growth of its Hennessy premium spirits brand in 2019, as well as its strong sales performance in champagne. That said, its Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior brands also were boosted by creative exhibitions and collaboration, including a strong relationship with Sephora. Christian Dior Maison’s increased production capacity by opening of two new leather goods workshops. Other positive momentum included joining hotel business Belmond, a partnership with Stella McCartney (with a commitment to sustainable, ethical fashion), and a debut in the high-end rose sector in the south of France.
BAT welcomed Jack Bowles as its new CEO in April 2019. Under Bowles, the company is evolving its strategy to reduce the health impact of its business and expanding its offerings of less risky products, such as tobacco heating products and vapor and oral alternatives. As part of this, the U.K.-based company created three global brands for its portfolio to simplify the consumer experience: VUSE vapor products, VELO modern oral products, and Glo tobacco heating products. It also acquired South African vaping company Twisp.
The LVMH-Tiffany merger discussions got their first formal legs in 2019, with the companies announcing that the French luxury conglomerate would acquire Tiffany in a $16.2 billion deal. That deal, however, ended up extending well through 2020 thanks a series of legal battles, and the two companies agreed in October 2020 for a new, $15.8 billion price tag. Before the pandemic took its toll on the apparel and jewelry sectors, LVMH had entered 2020 as “cautiously confident,” intending to focus on developing its brands through both innovation and investments.
As with other tobacco companies, Imperial Brands is putting its portfolio of vapor, heated tobacco and oral nicotine products — which it classifies as its Next Generation Products (NGP) — at the center of its growth strategy. Its international Blu brand leads the NGP portfolio, and it launched its first heated tobacco product, known as Pulze, in Japan. The company is comprised of four businesses: Imperial Tobacco, Fontem Ventures, Logista and ITG Brands. It experienced a bit of a leadership shakeup in 2019, as Alice Cooper stepped down as CEO and was replaced by Stefan Bomhard. Bomhard is currently conducting a strategic review of the company and is expected to release details in early 2021.

For Diageo, the trend to “drink better, not more” has bode well in many of the markets it serves. Company chairman Javier Ferran also attributes its deep consumer insights and strong customer relationships, combined with the breadth of its portfolio, as well-positioning the spirits brand for long-term growth. Perhaps most notable, in April 2019, Diageo and Jiangsu Yanghe Distillery formed a joint venture and launched a new-to-world whisky in China. In May, Baltimore’s Guinness Open Gate Brewery introduced an ecofriendly beer carrier in line with its new plastics targets for 2025. Diageo also opened its Bulleit Distilling Co. Visitor Experience tour, which highlights sustainability, technology and its modern entrepreneurial spirit.
In 2019, Kering doubled sales in all of its houses, while its Gucci brand prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2021 as part of the luxury group’s backbone. Digital excellence, constant innovation and exceptional collections are noted as the drivers for this growth. As such, Saint Laurent doubled its sales in four years, while Bottega Veneta had been reinvented shortly after the arrival of its new creative director, Daniel Lee, in June 2018. Also jumping on the sustainability wagon, Kering announced a new set of targets, leading to the publishing of its first progress report in 2019. The report indicated Kering as being on track to meet its new goals, which were recognized by the Carbon Disclosure Project’s Climate Change A-List.
Before COVID-19 pushed Reckitt Benckiser to the forefront as one of the most-watched consumer goods companies on the block, the CG was leaning into the hygiene, health and nutrition spaces to leverage its existing scale. As part of this, it put digital and e-commerce growth as a key priority moving forward — sound foresight for a company that includes such brands as Lysol, Mucinex, Finish, Durex, Dettol, Air Wick, Vanish, Enfamil, Nutramigen and Gaviscon in its portfolio. RB also gave precedence to sustainability within its operating model, teaming with both Veolia and TerraCycle as part of its pledge to have recycled material make up at least 25% of its global packaging content by 2025, and for 100% of it to be recyclable or reusable. The company also shuffled up its leadership in 2019, appointing Laxman Narasimhan as CEO, Kris Licht as chief transformation officer, and Harold van den Broek as chief operating officer.
The luxury goods company, which counts such brands as Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, A. Lange & Söhne, Baume & Mercie, and Mont Blanc in its portfolio, cemented digital growth as a cornerstone of its business strategy. As part of this, the company formed a joint venture known as Feng Mao in China between the Alibaba Group and its Yoox Net-A-Porter Group to grow its reach with Chinese consumers, marking the launch with the opening of the Net-A-Porter flagship store on Alibaba’s Tmall Luxury Pavilion. AZfashion, a second joint venture formed with fashion designer Alber Elbaz, was established as a startup focused on developing solutions for women. Richemont also acquired Italian jewelry company Buccellati in 2019, a deal expected to complement its existing jewelry brands.

For GSK Consumer Healthcare, most noteworthy in 2019 was the completion of its joint venture announcement with Pfizer, creating two highly complementary portfolios of consumer health brands. These include GSK’s Sensodyne, Voltaren and Panadol, with Pfizer’s Advil, Centrum and Caltrate. Underpinned by science-based innovation, the merger boasts the global leader in OTC products with No. 1 or 2 market share positions in all key geographies, including the U.S. and China. Next on the list of to-dos is integrating the two companies, and then GSK intends to demerge the joint venture from the company within three years and to list the GSK Consumer Healthcare business on the U.K. equity market.

M&As: In some cases, mergers, acquisitions or spinoffs that took place in the latter half of 2019 or later are not reflected in these sales totals. Deals that occurred in the first half of 2019 or earlier are reflected in the numbers.
Rankings: Because fiscal 2020 has yet to close for many companies, CGT used fiscal 2019 revenue totals to determine placement on the Top 100 list. All financial information was sourced from the company’s own annual reports and press releases. Revenue for each company is reported in millions of U.S. dollars. If a company’s revenue was reported in a different currency, the amount was calculated using a predetermined neutral exchange rate (Sept. 30, 2020). One-year gains are based on information from one of the aforementioned sources and methods.
Inclusion: Since the annual revenue of most privately held consumer goods manufacturers is not available, the annual Top 100 list only includes publicly traded companies. Therefore, well-known manufacturers such as Mars Inc. and Ferrero Group are absent from the rankings. (Mars, for instance, would be a top 15 company with its roughly $35 billion in annual sales.) It should also be noted that only revenues from the sale of consumer goods are considered when ranking companies that also have extensive operations in other businesses (such as the pharmacy and medical device operations at Johnson & Johnson).
