RSV vaccines are now available for adults 60 and over. They teach the immune system to recognize the respiratory syncytial virus and destroy it.
Respiratory Syncytial Virus
Antibodies
The immune system recognizes and responds to certain pieces of the virus that the vaccines contain.
Because the vaccine contains only parts of the virus, it can’t cause an RSV infection or make you sick.
Instead, the vaccine helps your body make antibodies, which means if RSV does enter your body, the antibodies will recognize and attack the virus.
In this way, the vaccine antibodies help prevent RSV infection, and if you do get the virus, the vaccine helps protect against serious illness.
