Apple, Amazon, Block’s Cash App, PayPal, Venmo and Walmart are among the global brands that are vying for super app supremacy in the U.S. market – and beyond.
But they’ll face stiff competition – not just from each other but from local players around the world too.
United States
U.K.-based neobank Revolut is expanding far beyond its P2P payment roots. Now operating in markets around the world, it offers payment cards, investments, insurance and travel services.
UK
Driven by global competition, leading wallet providers from across the Nordics are joining forces to retain their share of the local payments market. The merger of Norway’s Vipps, Denmark’s MobilePay and Finland’s Pivo aims to create a pan-Nordic super app with the scale to compete against global brands.

French super app Lydia began as a P2P payments app before expanding into offering loans, savings accounts, and investments.
France
From Kenya’s M-Pesa to Nigeria’s Gokada and South Africa’s VodaPay, super apps are bringing next generation digital tools to consumers across Africa.
Consider the case of Careem, a Dubai-based super app that operates throughout the Middle East and North Africa. Originally a ride sharing app, it now offers shopping, food delivery and transportation services, all linked to a mobile wallet.

From the earliest trailblazers – China’s Alipay and WeChat Pay – to India’s Paytm and Vietnam’s MoMo, APAC innovators continue to set new standards for what’s possible in super apps. In 2022, look for South Korea’s popular financial super app Toss to expand into multiple Southeast Asian markets, creating new competition for Indonesia’s Gojek and Singapore’s Grab.

Argentina’s leading e-commerce platform Mercado Libre became a regional super app leader by expanding to include its own mobile wallet, Mercado Pago, before adding banking and credit services.
Meanwhile, Bogotá-based Rappi is leveraging its wildly successful roots as a delivery service to offer a suite of financial services, travel bookings and more in nine countries – with plans to expand further across Latin America.
