Feeding America® is the largest hunger-relief organization in the United States. Through a network of 200 food banks and 60,000 food pantries and meal programs, it provides meals to more than 46 million people each year. Feeding America also supports programs that prevent food waste and improve food security among the people it serves; educates the public about the problem of hunger; and advocates for legislation that protects people from going hungry.
The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters, supplies about 40% of the nation's blood, teaches skills that save lives, provides international humanitarian aid and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.

Founded in 2002, Operation Homefront is a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to build strong, stable, and secure military families so that they can thrive – not simply struggle to get by – in the communities they have worked so hard to protect. $1 million donation to Second Harvest
January 20, 2022 - Northwest, NC
Food Lion Feeds donated $1 million to Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC’s “Hunger for Change” campaign. This funding will help build a new headquarters for Second Harvest at Whitaker Park located in Winston Salem, NC, in addition to supporting the new Providence Culinary Training and Nutrition Education Center Nourished by Food Lion Feeds, which will be housed within the new building.
“Food Lion Feeds’ support of Second Harvest Food Bank’s mission and work extends back 28 years,” said Eric Aft, CEO of Second Harvest. “This most recent donation reflects Food Lion’s commitment to helping organizations like ours expand transformational approaches to addressing hunger and its causes.”
Partners in Learning
On Feb. 24, our President, Meg Ham, presented Partners In Learning Child Development Center with a $125,000 donation. This funding will expand the kitchen at their new facility, which will be used for culinary training in addition to preparing nutritious, daily meals and snacks for the school’s 200 students. Approximately 60% of students at Partners In Learning are from low-income households.

At Operation Homefront, we shared some holiday cheer with 200 military families in Fort Bragg. Food Lion gift cards, Holidays Without Hunger boxes and bags of fresh produce were distributed through a drive-thru at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Leo the Lion was even there dressed in a Santa suit to wave to the kids and make the day extra merry for these neighbors who have already given us so much.

Charlotte Sort-A-Rama
October 14, 2021
Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina in Charlotte and Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina in Raleigh hosted their annual Sort-A-Rama events, where volunteers sorted and boxed food for distribution across the two food banks’ service areas. At the Charlotte event, 60 Food Lion associates were among the volunteers. Everyone practiced social distancing to ensure safety. Food Lion volunteers packed a wide variety of items including Food Lion-branded canned meats, fruit and vegetables. And in Raleigh, Food Lion associates sorted over 10,370 pounds of apples.

We donated equipment including a register, shopping carts, shelving and branded signage to Edgewood Developmental School in Goldsboro, NC school to create a mock Food Lion. Gift cards were also given to help stock the shelves! This mock store will allow special needs students to learn about money, grocery shopping, menu planning, job skills and more.
