COLIN
KAEPERNICK
Activist and Former Quarterback,
San Francisco 49ers
Colin Kaepernick's life as a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers changed forever in 2016 when he opted to drop down to one knee in protest of police brutality against Black people in America. His decision to stand up for the rights of Black Americans shifted the nation's idea of the position professional athletes have on and off the playing field.
Professionally, Kaepernick’s choice cost him dearly. Since his “take a knee” movement, Kaepernick has yet to be welcomed back into the NFL, despite being readily available. In October 2016, Kaepernick co-founded Know Your Rights Camp, which works "to advance the liberation and well-being of Black and Brown communities through education, self-empowerment, mass-mobilization and the creation of new systems that elevate the next generation of change leaders."
Standing up against police brutality that is disproportionately inflicted upon Black and Brown communities. He famously took a knee as the American national anthem played during NFL games.
