That's the idea at the heart of First Tee, the non-profit youth development organization now celebrating 25 years of empowering minds through its mission: to impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character and instill life-enhancing values through the game of golf.
“We see the outcomes every day when we see First Tee kids, and we’re just so proud of the work that our coaches and chapters are doing,” says Jennifer Weiler, senior vice president of network relations at First Tee.
Weiler says First Tee has experienced grass-roots growth since its inception, initially drawing interest through word-of-mouth or advertising in local newspapers. Now, it boasts a participant base that spans the globe with 150 chapters as well as a number of in-school and after-school programs, focused on “intentional efforts to invite under-represented young people to the program and reach into underserved communities,” says Weiler. “[With] coaches who reflect the diversity of our chapters. And technology growing the ways that kids can interact with us.”
Below, three alumni share stories of how First Tee not only influenced their younger years but also paved the way for their future careers, equipped them with powerful life skills and shaped their passions.
