Data literacy remains a major barrier to improving BI-related decision making. Even before the current talent crunch, finding enough skilled workers with a proper understanding of data wasn’t easy.
Fisher believes this comes from a misguided belief that expertise with data products equates to data literacy.
“We’ll teach you how to use the product, and that will make you data literate,” he says. This focus on specific, siloed tools can prevent users from becoming proficient in the broader sense.
Data literacy must be more about culture than individual tools, says Fisher. “[It’s] about the ability to read, to work, to understand and to collaborate and act upon the data that is available to you.”
That’s why building holistic user proficiency is a vital part of the Active Intelligence framework. “We provide natural language, conversational analytics that allow people to ask questions of their data, get insights [and] actually generate dashboards out of it," he says.
Users do more than just learn how to follow best practices—they come to understand why. That’s fundamental to data literacy.

Because traditional BI is not integrated across the entire organization, important data sources may be omitted from analysis. This results in business decisions predicated on incomplete and possibly inaccurate insights. Executives in this situation are leaving money on the table.
“If you’ve got all of this data, but you’re not actually using it to drive decision making … you’re never going to get the value you want,” Fisher says.
Traditional BI is static, whereas today’s decisions must be dynamic.
Dynamic, cloud-based, integrated and always-on: Active Intelligence pipelines reduce overhead costs and drive greater ROI by making more of existing data.
“We can operate that pipeline in our Cloud Services and reduce the total cost of ownership for our customers by over 40%,” Fisher says. “There’s an immediate efficiency gain in the value of the pipeline, [and] we can get 10 times more useful business data … into people’s hands.”
For executives unsure about making the move to Active Intelligence, Fisher has one thing to say: “Digital transformation is great. But unless you actually do something different, you'll never actually change.”
