Heir Or Despair? September 28, 2017
In the fall of 2017, Kendall Roy was rumored to be on the cusp of succeeding his father at the helm of Waystar Royco. Enthusiastic about the rise of digital media, the hip-hop-loving “heir with the flair” elaborated on his plans to take Waystar in a different direction from the tabloids-and-TV approach of patriarch Logan Roy. “We're fighting for eyeballs, eyeballs which we convert to our customer base, crate up and sell to advertisers. And the bottom line is we're losing to monopolistic disruptors, [like] Alphabet, Facebook,” he told Forbes at the time, dressed in a black suit offset by white Lanvin sneakers. “We are still in a position to leverage our brands into something in the new landscape. But if we don't, we're going to be the biggest horse trader in Detroit, 1909." With Waystar now mired in scandal and Kendall Roy the most prominent face pushing for his father’s dismissal, investors may be wondering if they bet on a losing horse.
