As the largest financial institution in Indonesia, Bank Mandiri is committed to being attentive, proactive and innovative in providing solutions to its customers. The strict supervision by financial regulators to guarantee privacy of customer information led to the organization [too] tightly controlling data access. All requests were sent to headquarters with a two-week turnaround to run a SQL query, gather information and prepare the report. This created a tension between the bank’s desire to be innovative and knowing there’s a better way to get data to decision-makers.

In 2017, Swiss Life carried out a study on its decision-making architecture. It found when data was used, there were issues related to homogeneity and reliability of results involving multiple tools being used throughout the organization. Swiss Life struggled with data silos that forced IT to multiply data feeds and analysts to rely on different sources in different applications. This study was a wake-up call and prompted a
reevaluation of Swiss Life’s decision-making approach, streamlining the solutions used and putting data at the center of its growth strategy.
