Answering the call: Dollar General brings new resources to a rural Missouri community
In 2019, residents of Koshkonong, Mo., joined together in a social media campaign asking the retailer to invest in their town.
A lifelong resident of Koshkonong, Mo., Hope Reed knew the benefits a Dollar General store could bring to her rural hometown. So, to generate community support and gain the retailer’s attention, she started the “30 Days of Dollar General” social media campaign in July 2019. Residents rallied together and advocated for their town, and Dollar General heard them. Within the first week of Hope’s campaign, a Dollar General representative met with city officials, and in February 2020, the community celebrated
the grand opening of its new Dollar General Koshkonong location.
“Understanding the unique needs of communities and how Dollar General can meet those needs through value and convenience is what drives our real estate strategy,” says Steve Sunderland, Dollar General’s executive vice president of store operations.
Dollar General is committed to providing customers with affordable and convenient access to essentials, particularly in communities that other retailers either cannot or choose not to serve. For Koshkonong residents, there is an appreciation for its relationship with Dollar General. Not only does the store provide the household items that families need, but it also serves as a contributor to the community by providing career opportunities and valuable tax revenue to the town. The people of Koshkonong see Dollar General as more than just a retailer; it is a member of their community and a part of their family.
In the video above, hear from leaders and residents of Koshkonong as they share their journey to bring Dollar General to their hometown and how the store has positively impacted the rural Missouri community.
