Helping a Florida community recover from unprecedented disaster
When category 5 Hurricane Michael hit Florida in 2018, Dollar General stepped in to serve.
When Hurricane Michael made landfall along the Florida Panhandle in October 2018, its strength took residents by surprise. “When we went to bed the evening before, we were expecting a rainstorm,” says Tiffany Pedro, a Panama City native and Dollar General district manager. “We were not prepared for what happened.”
When the skies cleared, Hurricane Michael’s destruction was evident for miles. Approximately 90% of homes and buildings in Panama City were damaged. Dollar General teams moved quickly to begin recovery efforts and help the community and affected team members.
“During difficult times and times of disaster, Dollar General is there,” says Denine Torr, Dollar General’s vice president of corporate social responsibility and philanthropy. “Our Employee Assistance Foundation provides financial support and helps with the recovery and healing efforts during those times of significant need.”
Hurricane Michael’s winds caused trees and debris to cover homes, cars, and roads. As a result, Pedro was trapped with her family in their home for two days without a generator to power cell phones and no other way to reach out. Many of Pedro’s coworkers feared the worst.
“I remember calling my HR representative. She said, ‘Oh my gosh, you’re alive! We’ve been looking for you,’” recalls Pedro. Dollar General and the Employee Assistance Foundation quickly found a hotel for Pedro’s family, providing a safe environment for her husband and children while she traveled back into town to help her neighbors. In total, the Dollar General Employee Assistance Foundation provided 133 employees with financial support and shelter following Hurricane Michael.
Almost one year after the hurricane, the company celebrated its 16,000th store grand opening in Panama City. Located where a former Dollar General store was destroyed by Hurricane Michael, the store’s opening had great local significance. It restored affordable accessibility to essential goods, demonstrated the company’s mission to serve the community, and provided local schools with life-changing funds to rebuild their libraries.
