Until late 2022, residents in Shellman, Ga., typically traveled several miles to purchase items they needed or wanted for their families.
Empowered to advocate for her community, Georgia State Sen. Freddie Powell Sims partnered with bipartisan state and local officials and contacted Dollar General. Their collective understanding of the benefits that Dollar General stores offer—including affordable access to quality, everyday items; economic stimulation, including localized tax revenue and job creation; and the ability for local nonprofits and schools to apply for Dollar General Literacy Foundation grants—prompted a formal request for the company to invest and build in Shellman. Their efforts paid off.
“I advocated for Dollar General coming to Shellman because there was a real need,” recalls Sen. Sims. “We were great partners in getting this project done, and we are just so excited that it’s here.”
Today, the store is serving this largely agricultural community with nearby access to foods, health and wellness products, cleaning and laundry supplies, personal care and beauty items, seasonal decor, and more.
“Dollar General really stepped up to close the gap for the community and provide value, choices, and options for customers to be able to stay local. They can get all the items they like and some of items they didn’t even know they needed,” says Connie Droge, Dollar General’s senior vice president of store operations.
In the video above, Sen. Sims, Shellman mayor James Weathersby, Droge, and local residents discuss the new store and its positive impacts.
