When extreme weather and natural disasters strike, impacted communities need help to recover and rebuild. With nearly 19,000 stores across the U.S., Dollar General is there to support the cities and towns it serves in their times of need. From providing emergency funds for employees to donating money to rebuild school libraries, the company is fulfilling its mission of Serving Others by helping ease the burden of these life-changing events and assisting in the recovery process.
Here’s how Dollar General offers support after a natural disaster.
Supporting communities when they need it most
Since 2005, the Dollar General Employee Assistance Foundation has provided financial support to employees in their times of need, which may include the loss of a loved one or damage to their homes because of a natural disaster or fire. Funding comes from employees, the company, and Dollar General board members.
Helping employees and their families rebuild
When Houston’s skies cleared after Hurricane Harvey in August 2017, an estimated 300,000 structures and 500,000 vehicles were damaged or destroyed in Texas. The storm personally impacted Dollar General district manager Sally Jimenez. Her home was flooded, her ground-floor possessions were ruined, and her vehicle was damaged.
To support Jimenez and help other impacted employees recover from the storm, Dollar General made a $1 million contribution to its Employee Assistance Foundation, which provided additional financial support to those in need.
Offering support after Hurricane Harvey
As a member of the American Red Cross’s Annual Disaster Giving Program, Dollar General supports relief and recovery efforts following natural disasters. In the U.S., the American Red Cross responds to more than 60,000 disasters each year and provides safe shelter, emotional support, and resources to assist in recovery.
Supporting
first responders
In July 2022, heavy rains across Eastern Kentucky led to historic and devastating flooding. As a result, hundreds of homes were destroyed and infrastructure was damaged. To help with recovery efforts, Dollar General provided $50,000 and
in-kind product donations through its American Red Cross partnership. More than 18,000 stores across the country also collected in-store donations to benefit the American Red Cross’s response efforts.
2022 Kentucky floods
Dollar General is committed to helping students of all ages improve their lives through education, particularly students whose school libraries are impacted by natural disasters. The company’s Beyond Words grant program helps public school libraries repair and rebuild when books, technology, and more are destroyed.
Ensuring education can continue after disaster
In July 2021, a fire caused water damage across more than 85% of Atlantic Middle School in Atlantic, Iowa. For more than a year, the school was closed while repairs were made. Dollar General’s Beyond Words grant program awarded $10,000 to help the library rebuild with new books and educational resources.
Rebuilding after a devastating fire
In October 2018, category-five Hurricane Michael left a path of destruction across the Florida Panhandle, damaging 90% of homes and buildings.
Dollar General assisted in the recovery efforts and repaired, rebuilt, and reopened stores to serve the affected communities. The following year, the company celebrated its 16,000th store grand opening in Panama City at a rebuilt store the storm had destroyed. During the celebration, customers received complimentary gift cards and product samples, and nearby Cedar Grove Elementary School and Parker Elementary School each received funding to improve their reading and literacy programs. Panama City Mayor Greg Brudnicki and Springfield Mayor Ralph Hammond each issued proclamations in their respective municipalities and declared September 28, 2019, as “Dollar General Day.”
