Nylon, polyester, acrylic, and other synthetic fibers make up 60% of the material used for clothing worldwide. The materials industry’s increasing reliance on plastic has created an unsustainable linear fossil fuel economy that is a major contributor to the world’s carbon emissions. NFW (Natural Fiber Welding) has set out to change that by innovating sustainable, plant-based materials that can be used not just for clothing, but also for shoes, accessories, automotive interiors, and more.
For the latest episode of The Ecopreneurs, Salesforce and FORTUNE Brand Studio traveled to NFW’s headquarters in Peoria, lll., to see how founder and CEO Luke Haverhals, Ph.D., and his team are providing industries with new material platforms to create products responsibly. Since 2015, the company has been using material science to harness the inherent circularity of nature and develop performance materials from recyclable, bio-based ingredients.
