MEET THE ECOPRENEUR: Luke Haverhals of NFW.
Synthetic materials are a significant contributor to climate change and pollution. NFW (Natural Fiber Welding) is innovating plant-based alternatives.
Today, more clothing is being produced than ever. The number of garments produced each year has at least doubled since 2000, and it will likely triple by 2050. As the materials industry works to keep up with the demand, it has increasingly turned to synthetic materials, such as polyester and nylon, to make clothing and accessories at a low cost. This use of plastic-based fabrics is not only contributing to global carbon emissions, but to microplastic pollution as well. Every time these synthetic materials are washed, they shed tiny plastic fibers that end up in the air and water—a threat to both people and the planet.
To end this cycle, the Peoria, Ill.–based company NFW (Natural Fiber Welding) is working to reinvent the material world with plants. NFW is using abundant natural ingredients to create high performance materials, such as MIRUM®, a sustainable leather alternative, and Clarus®, a plant-based performance material, that can be recycled at the end of their lives. These highly scalable, low-carbon solutions are transforming industries.
To learn more about how NFW is eliminating plastics and creating a plant-powered future, watch the video above.
