YOUTH MOVEMENT: The power of younger generations in fighting climate change.
Tree planting is a powerful solution in the fight against climate change. Plant-for-the-Planet is working to restore forests lost to deforestation.
It’s estimated that more than 15 billion trees are lost to deforestation each year. Due to trees’ ability to capture carbon, tree planting is one of the most effective solutions the world has for combating the climate crisis.
For over two decades, Felix Finkbeiner has been teaching others about the critical role trees will play in saving the planet. Inspired by the work of Wangarĩ Maathai, the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize laureate and environmental activist from Kenya who started a movement in the late 1970s to plant 30 million trees in 30 years, at just nine years old, Finkbeiner set out to plant 1 million trees in every country. Today, through his organization Plant-for-the-Planet (Planet), he has expanded his movement to restore up to 1 trillion trees around the world in order keep global temperatures from rising above 1.5˚ C—the heat threshold for limiting the intensity and frequency of extreme weather events, impacting resources, ecosystems, and biodiversity.
To reach this goal, Finkbeiner and his team are empowering young people to fight for their futures. Through Planet’s academies, which are hosted in cities worldwide, youth can learn about climate justice and the power of planting trees. With this knowledge, they can give lectures and participate in discussions that mobilize their communities around forest restoration and help protect the planet for the next generation.
To learn more about why Plant-for-the-Planet’s youth-led movement to plant 1 trillion trees is critical for combating the climate crisis, watch the video above.
