Proof of lawful residence and settled status You must have lived in the UK for five years and have held indefinite leave to remain (ILR) for 12 months (unless you are married to a British citizen, in which case you must hold ILR and have lived in the UK for at least three years) Good character and absence of serious criminal convictions In general, you must be of good character, without serious criminal convictions or breaches of UK immigration law, athough each case should be assessed on its own merits Knowledge of English and life in the UK You must have passed the Life in the UK test and satisfy an English language requirement Intention to continue living in the UK (not required for ancestry) Unless you are married to a British citizen, you must intend to have the UK as your main home for the foreseeable future.
