What is Citizenship by Ancestry?
Citizenship by Ancestry is a pathway to obtaining citizenship based on your ancestral lineage. This process allows you to reclaim a connection to your heritage and enjoy the benefits and privileges of citizenship, such as the right to live, work and travel freely within that nation or a wider region.
Most countries will offer a route that is generally limited to applications through a parent or grandparent, but some allow for more removed ancestors such as great, great-great and even great-great-great grandparents.
The specific requirements and documentation needed can vary significantly, but generally include proof of descent through birth certificates, marriage certificates and other legal documents that trace your family tree.

United Kingdom
A law passed in 2022 has expanded eligibility for British citizenship through ancestry, allowing individuals born outside the UK to claim citizenship by descent or double descent in certain circumstances. This does not require relocation to the UK nor English language skills.

Austria
Austria offers a streamlined route to citizenship for descendants of people who were forced to flee due to the Nazi regime. The relevant ancestor does not have to have been Austrian themselves but will need to have been resident in Austria.
