Solution
Syria > Jordan > Canada
Hamzah first heard about TBB in 2016 when he participated in a UNHCR workshop about connecting refugees with international employment opportunities in Canada, the UK, and Australia. He immediately submitted his profile to the Talent Catalog and hoped an employer would be interested in his skills.
“The working environment [at SigmaPoint] is amicable. My colleagues were very supportive and were willing to give any information I needed, even until now,”
Hamzah says. For Hamzah, moving to Canada to work was his “dream finally coming to life.”
For Hamzah, the dream of becoming an engineer had always been top of mind when he first moved from his hometown, Daraa, to Aleppo for university in 2009. But before he could make that dream a reality, Hamzah was blindsided by the rapidly deteriorating situation in Syria due to the civil war.
Hamzah found himself in Jordan instead, where his refugee status made it difficult for him to work in this field as an engineer. Despite the setback, Hamzah was still determined to forge his future. He knew he just needed the right opportunity to prove himself.

Problem
Solution
Syria > Lebanon > United Kingdom
Yasin found out about TBB and the NHS England Refugee Nurses program through a friend. After registering his skills and qualifications on the Talent Catalog, the TBB team contacted him for an interview with one of the participating NHS Trusts. Impressed by Yasin's knowledge and skills, the Trust offered him a nursing role and he arrived in the UK earlier this year along with 30 other nurses.
Yasin originally planned to work as a general nurse, but was interested in mental health so his Trust supported him through training to transition. Yasin featured on the Trust magazine and also won a GEM (Going the Extra Mile) award! Yasin’s future aspirations are to complete his NMC exams to become a registered nurse in the UK, to keep learning more about mental health and to complete a related masters degree.
“The Trust were talking about my journey and how I went from war to another country, then I came to the NHS. So I won a GEM award for thriving for the best. I was really happy, everybody was really happy and supported me” - Yasin
Yasin fled the war in Syria as a teenager. In Lebanon he obtained a university scholarship and graduated from his bachelor's nursing degree. However Yasin's nationality prevented him from registering as a nurse there. His only option was to work informally in a hospital ICU unit. This left him vulnerable to working long hours with little to no pay. As a Syrian refugee, Yasin also faced discrimination in Lebanon. He felt he was just surviving there and was not able to move around freely or enjoy life.
