The Case For Wearing Pajamas In Public
The best summer outfits start in the bedroom.
Lately, I've been thinking a lot about rest—not as something I save for weekends or a week of vacation each year, but as a mindset. Like most overachieving millennials, I was taught that slowing down meant idleness, idleness meant laziness, and laziness was something to avoid at all costs. I've spent much of my adult life trying to optimize every waking moment. (Case in point: I once spent an entire facial answering work emails. Sure, my skin looked glowier afterward, but my shoulders were more tense than ever.)
The older I get, the more I'm convinced that leisure is the ultimate luxury. Not because it's expensive, but because it feels increasingly out of reach. But what if leisure doesn't require a plane ticket or a perfectly planned itinerary? What if it could mean embracing the moments of rest we have—whether it's a mid-day bodega run or a night in at home catching up on Love Island—and letting go of the guilt?
That's the thinking behind our first-ever Leisure Issue. The stories ahead explore what it means to disconnect, whether that's under star-filled skies in the Moroccan desert, rethinking wellness through a Swiss lens, or the simple act of deciding to wear pajamas in public (like a fashion person, of course). I'll never say no to a spontaneous trip (for the plot!), but I hope this issue reminds you that leisure doesn't start when your OOO turns on—it starts the moment we decide that being present is productive enough.
