PALM SPRINGS WEEKEND ESSENTIALS
The resort communities of Palm Desert and Indian Wells are well known for golfing, tennis and being the most convenient place to sleep near Indio’s Empire Polo Grounds. Hotel Paseo, in Palm Desert, has 150 rooms done in soothing blue and grey soft coverings, with splashy touches here and there: a Calacatta marble-floored art gallery, oasis suites with freestanding tubs adjacent to the spa and even a blinged-out Airstream trailer dating from 1950 available for rent as a suite. (Rates start at $306)

If you’re a spa aficionada, you’ll want to stay near the hottest, richest mineral springs this desert has to offer, which is a six-block area known as Miracle Hill in the aptly named town of Desert Hot Springs. Two Bunch Palms is a historic property situated among palm, hammock and olive groves that’s rumored to be the site of Al Capone’s HQ in the 1920s. (Rates start at $425)
Architecture buffs will enjoy staying in a revitalized relic of midcentury design. This jazzy 17-room hotel was designed in 1947 by William F. Cody and is built around a distinctive saltwater swimming pool. Beach cruisers for the asking, kitchenettes in select rooms and a balcony or patio off of every pet-friendly room, this is throwback desert living with updated ease and convenience. (Rates start at $356)

Opened in 2023, this 30-room hotel is distinct from its midcentury-styled neighbors in that it has Moorish and Spanish Colonial décor livening up its super-spacious singles and suites (that range up to four-bedroom size, so great for traveling with groups). The pool is minimalist, but serves cocktails, and the platform king beds are comfortable. (Rates start at $389)

WHERE TO STAY
Tuscan al fresco meals are the inspiration for the outdoor courtyard dining hotspot Birba Palm Springs, where 100 percent of the roasted artichoke and three-cheese pie proceeds are donated to charity. Mr. Lyons is a steak house in the Palm Springs Rat Pack tradition updated to today’s palate with fare like the “Iconic Wedge,” kimchi fried rice and steak frite done with Wagyu beef. Then see out the evening by taking in a drag show at Toucan’s Tiki Lounge, a 20-year-strong powerhouse of lip-syncing, comedy and music.
dinner (& a show)
We’re bringing the party to Palm Springs with the pinnacle of celebration.Take the desert to new heights with top-tier spirit PATRÓN El Alto, a luxury prestige tequila meant for toasting to life’s most fun moments—like festival season. It’s handcrafted from the 100-percent Weber Blue agave grown in the highest parts of Jalisco, Mexico, that yields the sweetest agaves for an incredibly smooth taste.
tequila time
Destination dining comes to the afternoon hours with a drive out to La Copine in Flamingo Heights. This former roadside diner has been reinvented by a married couple who decamped from L.A. in 2015 and have been turning out high-level fare since. Think duck confit, mussels Dijonnaise, creamy grits…but don’t think too long, since the place is only open Thursday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Or if you’re hungry in Palm Springs, sink into one of the plush high-backed booths at The Tropical for a tiki-inflected experience. Or have a Mexican meal at Maleza. We recommend fish tacos, oysters with jalapeño mignonette and a Bloody Maria (a Bloody Mary made with tequila instead of vodka).
lunch
Cheeky’s is open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., which is a gift considering you won’t want sleeping in to keep you from enjoying pressed juices, a flight of five flavored bacons or an avocado toast with an egg on top from the chickens raised by the restaurant. Enjoy indoor-outdoor dining with a Francophile flair at Farm, where you can choose between sweet and savory crepes. Or just grab and go with a fresh house-made pastry and iced coffee at one of four Koffi locations in town.

WHERE TO EAT
Walking into this multi-brand luxury boutique is like rolling up to the home of your fancy friend who has traveled the world, collects designer clothes and has excellent taste. A sharply edited collection with pieces from labels including Celine, Rhode and Gucci make it fun to browse as well as buy—if you can get past the gorgeous Brazilian style of the entryway sitting area, itself a reason to visit.
The Webster
Outlet shopping gets a glow-up 20 minutes outside Palm Springs. It’s the ABCs of glam in here—for example, All Saints, Balenciaga and Chloe—with savings up to 65 percent off retail, all with the distant snow-capped mountains across the valley as a backdrop.

If you wanted to pick up one piece during your trip that speaks to the California lifestyle, you’d find it here. Vintage and contemporary Moroccan textiles have been curated by a North African berber expat who realized his dream of learning to weave, a skill denied to him as a male in his home country. We guarantee there’s something in this shop to keep you California cozy back home.
SOUKIE MODERN
The bright mirrored surfaces in the merchandising of Trina Turk, located in a prized building designed by Albert Frey, reflect the sunny optimism—as well as climate—of the desert, and here both men’s and women’s day and evening wear, as well as the all-important swim outfits, are on offer.
TRINA TURK
Consider this a one-stop shopping experience that showcases the best goods Palm Springs has to offer: vintage décor, tastefully curated gifts and midcentury home accessories including books, statues and art.

It’s a tradition that newcomers to town stop at Hadley Fruit Orchards on the outskirts of Palm Springs in Cabazon. It’s a combination tourist attraction and outlet for dried fruits and nuts grown on a family farm since 1931, and has two claims to fame: They invented the first trail mix to sustain hikers in the nearby San Jacinto Mountains, and it’s got a lock on the best recipe for a date milkshake made with dates grown right on local palms.

WHAT TO EXPLORE
Hike through a shady stand of palms along Palm Canyon Trail, 15 minutes out of town. Or get up early for the 45-minute drive over to Joshua Tree Natural Park for an easy hour-long walk past rugged rock formations and prehistoric-looking yuccas. Or just take a leisurely walk through the Prescott Preserve, a rewilded golf course that’s been turned into a pond habitat for wildlife.
ECO-WONDER HIKING
You’ve not really been to Palm Springs unless you’ve had the wellness equivalent of a baptism—a dunk into the natural waters that gave the place its name. Local and luxe, the new Spa at Sec-he assigns you a posh private room to indulge in bubbling mineral waters that soothe muscles and smooth skin, as well as services like reclining on a radiant quartz bed, floating in an Epsom salt sensory tank and a respiratory system-supporting salt cave.
GET SOAKED
It’s a must: Take a 10-minute ride on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway to really get your bearings on the wide expanse of desert beauty. Built in the 1960s, this funicular was envisioned by engineers as a way to get from the hot valley floor up the steep San Jacinto Mountains, where it’s up to 40 degrees cooler year-round. Take a jacket and get ready to climb 6,000 feet in a slowly rotating carriage, and enjoy a drink at the bar atop the peak before you head back down.
