It is also a strong option for business trips and events because it combines meeting-friendly amenities with a setting that still feels like a real escape once the workday ends.
Our stay in August 2026 felt true to the Newport Beach scene. The weather was warm, the pool was lively and the hotel had a social atmosphere without feeling like a full-blown party resort. You could spend the afternoon in a cabana, walk over to Fashion Island, have drinks overlooking the golf course and still return to a room that felt calm and comfortable.
This is a particularly good hotel for travelers who want access to the beach without necessarily staying directly on the sand. It feels more connected to the shopping, restaurants and polished social side of Newport Beach. Couples and friends will probably get the most out of the pool and dining scene, but families are welcome and have enough nearby to keep everyone entertained.
What’s the atmosphere like?
VEA feels modern, social and very Southern California. The design is coastal, but not in an overly literal way. Instead of seashells and nautical décor, expect warm woods, neutral colors, greenery, open-air spaces and large windows that put the surrounding views at the center of the experience.
The hotel has more energy than a quiet wellness retreat. The lobby, restaurants, pool and outdoor lounges attract both hotel guests and locals, especially on summer weekends. The property feels at its best when the weather allows everyone to move between indoor and outdoor spaces throughout the day.
The overall mood changes naturally as the day goes on. Mornings feel slower and more relaxed, afternoons revolve around the pool and evenings bring more of a cocktail-and-dinner atmosphere. It is stylish enough to feel special, but you do not need to be dressed up or overly formal to feel comfortable.

How was the service?
The service style matches the hotel itself: polished, upbeat and contemporary. VEA is a large resort with restaurants, events, a busy pool and extensive meeting space, so the operation has a lot happening at once, particularly during summer.
The hotel feels organized enough to handle busy weekends while maintaining the relaxed tone expected from a coastal resort. This is not old-school, highly formal luxury service. The approach is more casual and energetic, which fits Newport Beach and the social atmosphere of the property. It is best for guests who like attentive hospitality but do not need every interaction to feel ceremonial.
What was your favorite part?
VEA achieves a delicate balance between relaxation and activity. The pool and its surrounding views are what make VEA feel like more than a convenient Newport Beach hotel. The combination of cabanas, cocktails, palm trees, music and views stretching toward the Pacific captures the hotel’s personality perfectly.
The location is equally as important. Being able to walk to Fashion Island, return for a few hours by the pool or for a spa treatment and then head out to Corona del Mar or Balboa Island is a major plus. You are close to the coast and many of Newport Beach’s best-known areas without being locked into one particular neighborhood.
Know before you go:
VEA Newport Beach has coastal and ocean views, but it is not an oceanfront or beachfront hotel. If walking directly from your room onto the sand is the priority, this may not be the right fit. If you want a polished resort with a lively pool, strong amenities and immediate access to Fashion Island, the location makes much more sense.
Reserve spa appointments and pool cabanas in advance for an August stay, especially if you are visiting over a weekend. The pool can become lively, so travelers seeking a very quiet environment may prefer a weekday stay or more time at SPA VEA’s separate saltwater pool.
Confirm your room view at the time of booking. “Coastal,” “ocean,” “pool” and “golf course” views can create different experiences, and not every room will have an unobstructed Pacific panorama.
A car or rideshare is helpful for reaching the beaches, Balboa Island, Corona del Mar and restaurants beyond Fashion Island. The hotel is walkable for shopping and some dining, but Newport Beach as a destination is spread out.

Yes. The guest rooms provide a much calmer counterpoint to the social areas downstairs. The design is contemporary and coastal, with soothing colors, comfortable linens and floor-to-ceiling windows that make the rooms feel open and bright during the day.
At night, the room feels polished but uncomplicated. There is enough visual interest to make it feel like a resort, but it does not feel overly designed or cluttered. After a full day spent between the pool, Fashion Island and Newport Beach, it was easy to come back, cool down and settle in.
The view can make a noticeable difference here. Depending on the room category and location, rooms may overlook the ocean, pool, golf course or surrounding Newport Beach area. If the view is important to you, confirm the exact category when booking rather than assuming every room has a full ocean view.
Did you get a good night’s sleep?
The main pool is where much of the summer energy is concentrated. The 85-foot pool is surrounded by loungers, daybeds, private cabanas, outdoor seating and poolside service. It feels more like a social resort pool than a quiet lap pool. The cabanas are worth considering if you plan to spend most of the day outside. Having a shaded home base, dedicated seating and easy access to food and drinks makes the pool experience feel more like a full day rather than a brief stop between other plans.
SPA VEA is another major feature of the property. The 14,000-square-foot spa includes treatment spaces, a saltwater pool, private cabanas, a relaxation room, a yoga studio and outdoor areas with seating and a fireplace. It is designed as a separate retreat within the hotel, so it can provide a genuine break from the livelier atmosphere around the main pool.
The 5,000-square-foot fitness center is more substantial than the typical hotel gym. There is also a yoga studio and outdoor yoga lawn, with wellness classes offered as part of the resort’s rotating programming.
VEA is not directly on the beach, which is important to understand before booking. The hotel’s elevated position gives it beautiful coastal views, but reaching the sand requires a short drive or ride. The tradeoff is immediate access to Fashion Island and a central location for exploring several different parts of Newport Beach.
What amenities are available?
VEA works best when you split your time between the resort and the surrounding area. Start with coffee at Elan, spend a few hours at the pool, walk to Fashion Island for shopping or lunch, then return to the hotel before heading out for dinner.
Fashion Island is directly across from the property, making it one of the easiest activities to work into the stay. The open-air shopping center has designer stores, department stores, restaurants, cafés and ocean views, so it feels more like part of the Newport Beach experience than a standard indoor mall.
The hotel is also well positioned for trips to Corona del Mar, Balboa Island, Balboa Peninsula, Newport Harbor and the beaches. You can plan a beach morning, take the ferry across the harbor, book a boat outing or spend the afternoon exploring the shops and restaurants around Balboa Island.
During summer, VEA also hosts a rotating calendar of entertainment, wellness programming and family-friendly activities. In 2026, that summer lineup included outdoor concerts, comedy performances, holiday-weekend pool events and wellness experiences.
