What is your go to beverage?
CORRECT
We can’t say for sure that Doc would be able to use your lithium or other rechargeable batteries in his time machine, and you may have a hard time tracking him down. Did you know rechargeable batteries can be dangerous if not disposed of properly? That means we can’t put rechargeable batteries in recycling carts or household trash. Residents of St. Lucie County may bring rechargeable batteries, including vehicle batteries and cell phones, to the Solid Waste and Recycling Facility for free! Single-use alkaline batteries (like AA batteries) can be put in your household garbage for disposal.

FALSE
CORRECT
Unfortunately, Styrofoam is not recyclable in our curbside program. It also does not degrade or break down over time, so Styrofoam is one of the most environmentally unfriendly types of waste that exist today! You also shouldn’t reheat those leftovers in the Styrofoam container — when heated, Styrofoam releases toxic chemicals into the food causing a contamination that can be hazardous to your health. It’s better to skip the Styrofoam altogether! However, if you have Styrofoam packing peanuts, check with a local packing store. Most of them will accept Styrofoam packing material for reuse. You can also take clean (no food particles) Styrofoam to your local grocery retailer for recycling.
FALSE
CORRECT
While the cereal box is recyclable, the plastic bag inside it isn’t. Strange, right? A good rule of thumb is that if an item has the word “bag” in its name, it is not recyclable (except paper bags, of course!). Any plastic in film form should not be added to your recycling cart because it can jam up and damage recycling machinery. This goes for plastic grocery bags and pet food bags, too!
FALSE
CORRECT
Plastic bags are so lightweight that they can blow away if they aren’t contained. This means they can also carry your green army man behind enemy lines and he’ll never be seen again! Plastic bags escape from curbside carts into the environment and is one way many plastic bags end up in our oceans and rivers. When plastic bags are placed in your single stream recycling cart, they can also get caught up in the sorting equipment, causing unnecessary down time and maintenance. This goes for any kind of plastic film, plastic bags, or stringy materials. The thing to do is to take plastic bags to your local grocery retailer for recycling or place them in your household garbage. Consider skipping the plastic bags altogether and switch to reusable shopping bags.
FALSE
CORRECT
Propane tanks are considered hazardous, which means they cannot go into your recycling cart or household garbage. This also means you shouldn’t beat it up like a piñata (trust us, there’s no candy inside). When placed in the garbage or recycling carts, they’ve been known to cause fires in recycling facilities and landfills, which is dangerous for everyone. Bring your old propane tank to the Solid Waste and Recycling Facility to be properly disposed of. The 2019 price for disposal is $2.50 per 20-pound tank. You can also wait until your city’s household hazardous waste collection day where 20-pound propane tanks are collected for free.
Throw it all in the garbage
Place it in the recycling cart, except for the envelopes with the little plastic windows
Shred them and use them as bedding for your hamster
Place it all in the recycling cart
FALSE
CORRECT
Even though many junk mail envelopes have the little plastic address windows attached, you can still recycle the whole envelope — no need to tear it apart! We really wouldn’t recommend using shredded junk mail for your hamster, as those little guys are kind of messy and shredded paper isn’t very absorbent.
Great, you just checked the mail and it’s nothing but junk again! What can you do with all that junk mail?
