Cities and the waterways that run through them are inextricably linked— economically, culturally, and geographically. Columbia, South Carolina, is no exception. At the heart of this college town and capital city, the convergence of the Broad, Saluda, and Congaree rivers forms a natural crossroads that for centuries forged connection and commerce and today sustains recreation, transportation, and civic life.
For Indigenous traders and early colonial settlers, “the river was everything,” says Mike Dawson, CEO of the River Alliance, a Columbia-based nonprofit. Before the Revolutionary War, these waterways provided the fastest route for transporting goods to the coast and back. Then the canal system was built—the largest public works project in South Carolina in the early nineteenth century—and the people became less reliant on the rivers. In many ways, Dawson says, that disconnect persisted until the early 1990s, when his organization began working to reclaim the city’s blue heart as a public amenity.

EXPERIENCE COLUMBIA SC
Take it from one of the country’s leading interior designers: In a crowded field of high-performance textiles, one rises above the rest. “Many fabrics claim stain resistance, but only one has truly earned that reputation,” says Kentucky-born, Los Angeles–based designer Martha Mulholland. She’s referring to Crypton Performance Fabric, the North Carolina–made brand she incorporated throughout Garden & Gun’s reimagined headquarters in Charleston, South Carolina.
To create a working environment that feels as polished as it is practical, Mulholland leaned on a collaboration between Crypton and Austin-based furnishings company Four Hands. “G&G is an arbiter of timeless Southern taste and style, and their workplace should reflect that as much as the magazine itself,” she says. “Crypton’s collection with Four Hands was the perfect fit for a project that required both durability and beauty. The designs feel refined, classic, and built to last.”

elegant enough for a cocktail party and practical enough for an office

In a shared workspace called the Workroom, for example, Mulholland selected Fenn Dining Chairs, whose square-framed seats are outfitted with plush bolsters, making them sturdy enough for working hours yet elevated enough to welcome guests at evening events. In the Library, Four Hands’ Fritz Dining Table—a beautifully crafted Spanish-style piece anchored by a curved, hammered-iron stretcher—serves as a generous communal work surface, one suited for brainstorming sessions and social gatherings alike.
An accent bench in the hallway offers a quiet perch for taking a call or making casual conversation—without worrying about spills or stains. The same is true for the durable yet handsome kitchenette and the Workroom’s sand-colored but infinitely forgiving sectional couch.

“Not only are Crypton fabrics impervious to everyday messes, their wide range of colors and compositions allowed me to design a space for G&G that’s elegant enough for a cocktail party and practical enough for an office,” Mulholland says.
With the right fabrics in an accomplished designer’s hands, high style and the demands of everyday life both get a seat at the table.
