Other interior designers might have balked at the brief: Design the headquarters of the South’s leading lifestyle magazine not just as a workplace, but as a stage for storytelling, hospitality, and gathering—inside a National Register of Historic Places building in the center of an urban historic district. But Martha Mulholland saw Garden & Gun’s vision as an opportunity to showcase her singular talent for creating spaces as transportive as they are hardworking.
Born in Kentucky and based in Los Angeles, Mulholland filters a distinctly Southern reverence for the past—one shaped by her studies in art history and historic preservation at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago—through a progressive lens. Her then-meets-now sensibility and keen eye for balance made her an ideal match for G&G’s new home at 21 Magazine, located inside the old city jail in Charleston, South Carolina.

“Maintaining a formality, but then working with a lot of color and different materials to bring the space up to date and fresh was the goal,” Mulholland says. “We wanted it to be representative of what G&G is about, which is the South and the South’s history, but also what all of that means in today’s world.” That meant embracing a warm, classic color palette and an English and Early American vernacular in the form of upholstery, wallpaper, and curated antiques, then marrying those elements with modern, functional touches.
“We have these big open spaces where we added built-in storefront-like glass enclosure, so it’s all very white and bright,” Mulholland says. “Bringing in rich, saturated colors was the way to warm them up and make them feel cohesive.” She achieved this in part through seating from LEE Industries, which she enhanced with curated textile accents.
Mulholland aimed to avoid the feel of a typical workspace. “The idea was that this office should be a place where you can both sit at a desk or a desk-height table, but also go and sit on the sofa, sit in a lounge chair, and work on a laptop,” she says. While generous nineteenth-century windows flood the interior with natural light, tailored window treatments diffuse South Carolina’s formidable rays. As daylight recedes, artisan-made fixtures take over, casting a warm, atmospheric glow that transitions seamlessly into evening gatherings.

We wanted it to be representative of what G&G is about...but also what all of that means in today's world.

Underfoot, Mulholland regarded the space’s flooring as an architectural canvas—one that demanded a textile of equal integrity. She found it in Elizabeth Eakins: the brand’s handwoven wool rugs introduce rich color and subtle texture while standing up to the demands of an office and event space. The same philosophy guided the selection of work surfaces. Four Hands with Crypton supplied richly grained wooden tables, benches, and cabinetry whose understated sculptural presence is primed for performance. And to round out the seating in the lounge, kitchenette, and hallway, Crypton’s spill- and stain-resistant fabrics offered both practicality and visual appeal.
G&G at 21 Magazine is not just for working, but for welcoming—for storytelling as well as Southern hospitality. In this thoughtfully designed space, editorial workstations coexist with intimate seating areas and refined communal spaces where contributors, collaborators, and friends come together.
