You started filming The Johnnyswim Show early in the quarantine. What was that experience like?
Abner: TV has always been something we wanted to do—it
was a kind of secret dream between the two of us. Chip and Joanna Gaines, who are good friends of ours, called us up one day and said they wanted to produce a show with us, so when the Magnolia Network came about, we were the first show
in production.
Originally, it was supposed to be a travel show, capturing us on tour, raising these wild kids on the road. When the pandemic hit, we had to pivot. The first season shows us coping with the loss of the life we’ve known for so long, and figuring out how to come closer together.
Amanda: It’s kind of cool to have a bird’s-eye view of your own life. I didn’t want to watch it at first, but it’s really helped me notice what a beautiful life we have.

A Southern
Back-to-School
Style Guide
Clad in Polo Ralph Lauren, these students
are ready to ace the first day and beyond
For the past 50 years, the iconic Polo shirt has lined the pages of many a school yearbook. Crisp and comfortable, it transitions from the skate park to sailing lessons, and it’s perfect on picture day when paired with a cotton twill A-line skirt or chino shorts. Or choose a festive button-down shirt for a look that will make parents smile for years to come.
camera ready
Looking put-together but playful is a Southern specialty—and a perfect combination for the first day of school. Polo Ralph Lauren helps primary schoolers dress to impress with timeless, tasteful, and fun styles—drop-waist striped jersey dresses, preppy cotton mesh shorts, and color-block T-shirts included.
first impressions
It’s a tradition that begins every July, when cicadas sing out the end of each long afternoon and the blacktop feels as if it could melt the soles of your shoes: Across the South, a cold blast of department store air ushers in back-to-school shopping season, a chilly reminder to parents that their children are growing up. Kids, too, feel a shiver of excitement as piles of carefully folded shorts and racks of colorful dresses convey the promise and possibilities of a new school year.
That school year starts earlier in the South than elsewhere in the country, and kids’ clothing must be suitable for air-conditioned classrooms and sun-baked playgrounds alike. For decades, parents and kids alike have turned to Polo Ralph Lauren for just this kind of timeless style and classic comfort—like a convertible cotton jersey cap-sleeve ringer romper that’s equally ready for chess club and tennis practice. Planning ahead for fall? The brand’s enduring aesthetic makes stocking your child’s wardrobe easy. (A bigger challenge: guessing what size your kindergartner will be when the leaves change.)
Garden & Gun partnered with Polo Ralph Lauren and Dillard’s to show off this year’s best back-to-school styles, no matter the weather.
Southern kids head back to school in scorching temperatures. Comfort is non-negotiable, especially with recess on the schedule. Enter activewear from Polo Ralph Lauren. Even your second grader will approve of these polished yet breezy fleece shorts and cotton jersey ringer tees.
wear to play
