Everything that’s old is cool, and your city is the perfect embodiment of that. That makes it the perfect place to hunt for vintage home goods, furniture, and fashions. Find reclaimed pieces for the home as well as quality fashion pieces of the past in the vintage corridor of the city. Speaking of vintage, your city has a long and rich history. There’s no shortage of museums and tours to help you explore its past. Visit some of the historic home museums as well to get an intimate look into the lives of some of the city’s most historical figures.
While you’re at it, make time to visit your city’s many historic landmarks. Representing
key moments in your city’s past, from the founding to the modern era, a walking tour
of these sites, markers, and monuments is the best way to gleen a clear picture of
your city’s place in American history.
For you, getting to know a place means understanding its past. There are few chapters in Colonial American history as unique as the story of Winston-Salem’s Moravian community. And because so much of the town’s past has been reverently preserved, history buffs can easily revisit those humble beginnings, starting at Bethabara, their first settlement, nestled in a picturesque, wooded wildlife preserve. After exploring Bethabara, make your way to Old Salem Museums & Gardens, a charming 1766 Moravian settlement just south of downtown. The eighty-three-acre village is now an immersive “living history museum” offering hands-on exploration of eighteenth-century traditions and trades. You can stroll along the cobblestone streets and tour dozens of the hundreds of restored buildings, where you'll encounter costumed interpreters who bring the past to life.
Another can’t-miss for history appreciators is Reynolda House Museum of American Art, built in 1917 for tobacco tycoon R.J. Reynolds and his family. Today the sixty-four-room home is filled with a treasure trove of family relics, period furnishings, vintage fashions, exhibits, and more. Adjacent to the estate is historic Reynolda Gardens—home to a spectacular formal garden, historic greenhouse, and waterfall—and Reynolda Village, a former working farm that’s now filled with specialty shops and dining options.
The Historic Brookstown Inn, housed in an eighteenth-century textile mill, makes a fitting accommodation for any person with a passion for the past. And you won’t find a more convenient choice, as the hotel is just a five-minute stroll from Old Salem.

There’s nothing more exciting than finding something new–from a new pair of shoes to a new favorite hang-out spot–and your city has several fresh destinations for shopping, dining, and chilling. A recently opened outdoor shopping experience in town offers a collection of restaurants and retail, both national brands and local favorites.
With distinct neighborhoods, your city offers plenty to discover from chic boutiques to fresh coffee shops and community spaces. Grab a rental bike and go explore the latest developments on two wheels. Or follow the recently opened urban city walking trail to get an overview of the city before checking the box on your next itinerary activity.
Since you prioritize dinner reservations over just about all other vacation activities, you’ve come to the right destination. Winston-Salem’s culinary credentials were established in the eighteenth century with the arrival of the Moravians, and no food-focused visit would be complete without a taste of that era. For that, you’ll want to hit the Winston-Salem Moravian Culinary Trail, composed of bakeries producing whisper-thin Moravian cookies and buttery Moravian sugar cakes, joined by area eateries dishing up simple Moravian chicken pie. From there you can set a course for more contemporary flavors at one of more than 120 downtown restaurants, including recent James Beard Award semifinalists: Sweet Potatoes restaurant, Heff’s Burger Club, and Mission Pizza Napoletana.
Just west of the city is the award-winning Yadkin Valley wine region—North Carolina's largest and most prestigious wine area—where you can sample vintages from nearly fifty nearby wineries. Beer enthusiasts need not feel neglected; nine craft breweries in Winston-Salem invite visitors to sample their suds according to a long tradition (Bethabara was the site of the first brewery in North Carolina in 1756). Conveniently, all nine breweries are located in the city’s walkable downtown, making it easy to plan a DIY Craft Draft Crawl. Beyond beer and wine, you can shake things up at a number of upscale cocktail lounges in the downtown area, including EasyTalk, where you can sip a custom-made beverage prepared by 2022 North Carolina Bartender of the Year David Bowen.
Perhaps the most surprising treat for any foodie visitor is the fact that Winston-Salem is the birthplace of both Texas Pete hot sauce and Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Today, travelers can visit the original flagship Krispy Kreme store on Stratford Road, located five minutes west of downtown.
Linger longer with artisanal bites from the Shaffner Inn or Summit Street Inns, three sister B&B properties that comprise Winston-Salem's Historic Inns collection. Recently restored, these charming properties specialize in luxury accommodations and fine-dining options.

Downshift to tranquility mode in Fort Myers, where opportunities for rest and relaxation abound. Start your visit at Gulfside City Park Beach or Bowman’s Beach on Sanibel Island, which both offer ample parking. While away an afternoon in the sunshine, then report for your sunset voyage with Captiva Cruises to experience a stunning evening on the water. If you’re still longing to get on the ocean the next day, rent a private boat to explore the waterways and islands that dot the coast of Fort Myers; you might spot dolphins playing in your wake. Better yet, hire a charter to hop between secluded barrier islands like North Captiva and Cabbage Key.
Those who prefer to travel with pets in tow will enjoy the appropriately named Dog Beach in Bonita Springs. When the sun goes down, take your pup home before ending the day with a nightcap at Coconut Jack’s Waterfront Grille. Here guests can spot dolphins frolicking in the water while enjoying fresh local seafood in a casual atmosphere—the perfect way to toast a great day on the shore.

The pull of nature and a love for adventure drive your vacation planning. Whether you define outdoor adventure as strolls through centuries-old gardens or challenging hikes in state parks, Winston-Salem is the perfect getaway.
Begin your horticultural exploration where the first seed in Winston-Salem was planted—at Historic Bethabara Park, home to the nation's oldest-known medicinal garden (Hortus Medicus) and a community garden. Dig into two centuries of gardening traditions with a walk through Bethabara’s unique green spaces and wooded trails before heading to Old Salem Museums & Gardens, where you can get an up-close look at several award-winning heirloom gardens.
Continue on to Reynolda Gardens, a 134-acre oasis adjacent to the Wake Forest University campus, designed under the thoughtful eye of Katharine Reynolds, wife to tobacco tycoon R.J. The peaceful landscape offers scenic trails and excellent bird watching. If your hiking plans are a bit more ambitious, two nearby state parks offer some of the highest-rated trails in the Southeast. Hanging Rock, located thirty miles north of the city, promises mountain views and waterfalls as well as a lake for swimming and paddling. Even closer is Pilot Mountain, an equally picturesque point of interest that sits twenty minutes north of downtown. This fascinating “geological knob” towers 2,421 feet above sea level and is one of the state’s most distinctive natural features. Hiking, camping, rock climbing, and even horseback riding can all be enjoyed at this spot.
Rest and recover from your day at the Graylyn Estate with the Reynolda Experience package, which pampers travelers with a butler tour of the Graylyn, a chef-prepared breakfast, and a $50 dinner credit at the estate’s on-site restaurant.
