Following The North Face Classics Expedition, brand designers updated the Mountain Jacket based on feedback from the triumphant trip. By building the jacket around GORE-TEX as a core technology, climbers and trekkers are treated to the same level of comfort as skiers.

Sally McCoy, design director at The North Face, led a treacherous Everest climb hampered by extreme weather. McCoy is inspired to design a modular system called “The Expedition System,” in which the Nuptse Puffer and Denali Fleece can zip into the Mountain Jacket.

1990
The Mountain Jacket gets updated with a boxier and shorter cut that’s compatible with a climbing harness, which becomes its trademark design. The new iteration also featured “alpine style” front pockets, angled vertically to give athletes secure access while staying geared up.

2010
The North Face partnered with streetwear giant Supreme to create collaborative Mountain Jackets for the first time, catapulting the expedition-grade layering system beyond the outdoor scene. The collab features three colorways and a British Millerain waxed cotton fabric.

In another example of a streetwear mashup, The North Face tapped INVINCIBLE to create a Mountain Jacket featuring a photographic print of Sally McCoy’s 1987 Snowbird Everest Expedition, paying homage to the layering system’s origins.
