Elevating Unseen Perspectives
Visuals are powerful. They tell stories, challenge attitudes, and move people towards common ground.
Gain access to never seen before HBCU content while helping support further digitizing of
HBCU archives.
Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have been a pillar of intellectual thought and cultural identity for the Black community for over a century. Getty Images created The Photo Archive Grant for HBCUs—in partnership with the Getty Family and Stand Together— and commits $500,000 to digitize the HBCU Grant Recipients photographic archives, the repositories of untold narratives of American history.
Digitizing this visual history benefits students, professors, and the public through increased access of unique imagery and previously unseen stories. All licensing proceeds go back to the HBCUs, as well as to the grant, ensuring growth and visibility of the collection. Watch this video highlighting our first-year grant recipients, and see their newly discovered and restored content.
The Black History & Culture Collection frames a point of view not traditionally seen in the media. The collection—a not-for-profit initiative curated by the Getty Images Archive team, in consultation with internationally recognized educators and historians—was created to provide access to historical and cultural images of the African/Black Diaspora in the US and the UK.
Launched in July 2022 with over 30,000 images, it paves the way to a deeper understanding of Black history. All collection content is available to license for commercial purposes, and can be coupled with the services of our Research and Rights & Clearance departments for a fully seamless process.
