Using an Open-Source Dynamic Routing Tool for Sustainable, Flexible, and Cost-effective
Last Mile Distribution in Zambia
The USAID Global Health Supply Chain Program-Procurement and Supply Management (GHSC-PSM) project is funded under USAID Contract No. AID-OAA-I-15-0004. GHSC-PSM connects technical solutions and proven commercial processes to promote efficient and cost-effective health supply chains worldwide. Our goal is to ensure uninterrupted supplies of health commodities to save lives and create a healthier future for all. The project purchases and delivers health commodities, offers comprehensive technical assistance to strengthen national supply chain systems, and provides global supply chain leadership. Since 2021, Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA) has been using an open-source dynamic routing tool to execute distributions across Zambia by following the example of commercial supply chains where dynamic routing has long been the gold standard. This tool, is deployed as a cloud-based solution that receives digital data from the Warehouse Management System (WMS) and Logistics Management Information System (LMIS) at ZAMMSA and digital road network data from openrouteservice.org to drive an open-source route optimization solver to dynamically generate optimal routes for all orders available for delivery within minutes. The source code for this tool is available on Github for other organizations to download and use in their contexts.
During this presentation, we will describe the key features and successes of the Dispatch Optimizer Tool (DOT) in Zambia. Following the presentation, a hands-on demo will walk you through the data elements and steps required to use this application in your organization!
