The history of hiring in the modern age
Recruiting has been around since the Roman Empire. During World War II, recruitment agencies were created to fill the gaps in the workforce left by departing soldiers. Over the past 40 years, the recruitment industry has undergone major changes.
Scroll down to see how recruiting has
transformed from the 1980s to today.
Welcome to the age of social media. Recruiting was transformed once again with the booming popularity of the professional networking platform LinkedIn – which had 467 million users in 2017.
The local newspaper was the dominant channel that recruiters used to find talent. Recruiters also relied on a vast Rolodex full of business cards to call potential candidates.
In the mid-80s, personal desktop computers entered the market. This enhanced access to technology and printers led to job seekers having more professional-looking resumes.
In the late 90s, online job boards (like Monster.com and Hotjobs.com) started to transform the recruitment market with job seekers surfing the net to discover new opportunities.
In the mid-2000s, recruitment companies began using candidate analysis methodology to match the right person with the right position.
High-speed internet
and emerging video conferencing solutions allowed job interviews to be conducted online. The move to virtual meetings helped accelerate the recruitment timeline even more.
The rapid growth of remote work has enabled employees to work from anywhere they choose. This has led to a competitive global “war for talent” where employee retention is a key factor for companies aiming to stand out among their competitors.
Recruiters can now search the globe for the right candidate. Thanks, to modern technology, the search for talent is no longer limited to geographical location or time zone.
Fax machines helped speed up the recruitment process. The ability to safely send a resume or an employment contract enabled recruiters to fill roles much faster.

The 21st century started with email becoming the go-to form of communication for recruiters and job seekers. Online resumes turned into the norm — with physical copies slowly going extinct.
The competition to hire
the best will increase in the years ahead. Companies that give extra flexibility to their employees will have the edge in this area.
