HOLE 17

445 YDS - PAR 4

The 17th is one of the most unique holes on the course and demonstrates how an alteration in the bunkering—in this case restoring an atypical Ross feature—can intensify strategic decisions.

Green reestablished a continuous trench bunker that ran parallel to the fairway on the left but disappeared sometime between 1949 and 1955, and then added an extension it farther downfield.

Most players will continue to play toward the primary fairway on the right, setting up a short pitch approach across the trench, while longer players may attempt to drive over the trees to the island fairway on the left.

A deep bunker used to block the entire face of a wide, shallow green that’s now been reoriented to be much deeper, with flanking bunkers to the sides and a surface that rises toward the back point.
