In a world seemingly moving to greater extremes, it is more critical than ever to recognize that opposing forces don’t have to be at odds, but together, can create harmony. Light itself is a study of contrasts: both a particle and a wave, an object, and a state of being. It relies on its opposite to be seen and experienced. Darkness allows for strategic illumination, depth, and drama. Heaviness provides the grounding nature upon which lightness can be felt.
Within our Vignettes, we convey a point of View that explores how these contradictory elements can form a cohesive whole. The silhouette of our model emerges from the darkness carrying a Vogue resemblance of our namesake, 3045 Park Avenue. Light dances among the crystals, Vibrant and fluid, underscoring the rigid horizontality of the wood canopy. The piece evokes a sense of ephemerality as the Velocity of light bursts forth against the anchored building Volume. The juxtaposition of light vs. dark, dynamic vs. static elements results in a balanced composition that highlights the harmonic resolution between opposing forces.

The project we selected – Truebeck Construction’s office in San Francisco – is a perennial favorite amongst our designers and clients. We consider it one of the highest compliments for a contractor to trust us as a designer to help realize their vision and execute a design. Truebeck takes great pride in their craftsmanship and culture, both of which we celebrate in the space. Collaborating with the Truebeck team to develop the design, understand their values, and to ultimately see the pride they have for their space was an incredibly rewarding experience.
The look drew inspiration from the structure, materials, and light featured throughout the office. A full skirt, complete with crinoline, was inspired by the iconic light fixtures that define the character of the office. The bodice features a herringbone pattern of leather and cork, inspired by the signature herringbone wood paneling featured in the reception area. Also to note, the skirt features a custom print, which calls to mind the finish of galvanized metal and the color of dark anodized aluminum – materials that also feature throughout the space."

RMW’s 5V vignette focuses on five important themes – Movement, Technology, Light, Innovation, and Sustainability. These key words informed our decisions throughout the process and relate closely with the architecture and garment created.Inspired by the Uber headquarters campus in San Francisco, our garment design captures the kinetic movement found within our culturally rich and vibrant City. We chose two adjoining spaces within Uber HQ to highlight the experience of movement within the design. The first is an optical experience of streaming lights that projects abstract imagery to welcome and engage the user within the building lobby. The adjacent second space is a curved backlit perforated metal screen with thin slots that suggest a directional movement to guide guests to their destination. Our garment design strives to weave these two architectural spaces together. Starting with a continuous loop, it evokes the continuous movement and journey through the space. With soft and curved shapes drawn from the built environment, an integrated LED light provides the technological means of ever-flowing motion. This garment can be worn anywhere with the use of a small pocket-sized rechargeable battery.

That's A Wrap
Studio O+A
Man or woman, black or white? Gay or straight, chill or tight? You may think fashion is this or that, But this AND that is where fashion's at. That's a wrap on either/or. That's a wrap on culture war. That's a wrap on tired old tropes, On funky fears and capsized hopes. Our revolution is not disruption. This is a get-it-together eruption. What if we fell in love again with all that stuff we thought we'd lost? Respect. Consensus. Sharing the cost. What if we cut the Earth some Slack?
And worked on getting our mojo back By spreading mojo far and wide and taking pleasure in others' pride? What if we swapped coats and traded stories. As travelers did before the glories Of this world were fully known? What if the next was OURS to own?
That's a Wrap by Studio O+A was inspired by: Slack Headquarters, San Francisco, 2018. Both garment and space look to nature's diversity for a path forward And find it in the community of hikers on a wilderness trail. Because it's going to take everyone to find a way out of the wilderness we're in.
We're all in this coat together.

Urban Revival
Inspiration for this tailored garment was taken from the historic Schlage Door lock factory and office building located in San Francisco. The building was built in 1960, and the Schlage company moved out in 1999. The building remained vacant for over 20 years, and in its abandoned state became a home to graffiti artists and the homeless. Taking cues from the distinctive Mission Revival style shell and the interior, long dilap-idated and taken over by street artists tagging on the interior spaces, M Moser was inspired to respect the past, celebrate the future, use resources wisely, and build community through the design. Androgynous in form and sensibilities, this urban figure is San Francisco. The garment appears with a bold, triangular shaped rigid base that is a crisp, clean, and unadorned state-ment. The kilt consists of mixed media tiers of white Tyvek building paper, black screen mesh, and bright copper finish that reflect the construction process and evolution of the historic building. Open sides reveal the inner lining and leggings covered by vibrant graffiti, celebrating the artistry and spir-it of the community. In contrast, the top evokes the timeless warmth and texture of a clay tile roof through the rich terracotta color and varied petals that create a nuanced textile that cocoons the wearer while lightly reflecting and shielding from theenvironment.

Waste Isn't Waste Until We Waste It
HOK Team
In this age of fast fashion, everyone can shop foron-trend clothes whenever they want. With increasing demand and faster production times, the clothes aren't built to last and quickly go out of style. And because the owner didn't spend much money on them to begin with, these clothes are quickly discarded, piling up in landfills and creating large amounts of textile waste. The HOK team has crafted a jacket with waste fabric to create an upcycled garment that is unique and completely different from the original. We took inspiration from the sculptural form of the HOK designed Salt Lake City airport by using color in a gradient, texture and movement through the varying scale of fringes and volume through the shape of collarjacket. This jacket exemplifies how much we can do with the simple pieces in our wardrobe.

Forest to Ocean
Aptos Branch Library
Taking inspiration from the project design concepts, we created a piece that pulls from the deep blues of the Pacific Ocean and the vibrant greens of the redwood forest. To one side of the library a bright kelp forest, to the other a peaceful redwood forest. The fold of the fabric taking inspiration from the movement we see throughout the building. The rhythmic lapping of the ocean tide, the swirly movement of the ever flowing water current, the spiraled green of kelp reaching up from the ocean floor. A crown of the forest canopy. As water fades to sand, sand that becomes earth, earth that support the towering forest of Nisene Marks.

Studios Architecture
STUDIOS transformed Apple’s office space in the mid 1980’s by using volumes of color, movement, and highly-patterned thresholds. Vibrant purple cable trays wind through the space, creating movement while connecting zones of the office. Their regular, decisive openings expose the wiring and electrical infrastructure, adding a touch of color and contrast. At the lobby of the project, a shed-like portal clad in black and white striped tile frames select views of important new technology and the office space beyond.Together, these vignettes informed our jacket design. The outside of the coat is a bold, purple, slightly lustrous fabric that mimics the dominant purple volumes of the cable trays. Openings in the sleeves expose colorful cording, taking their cue from the opening and exposed conduits while also helping to provide structure to the garment. The interior of the coat is lined with a black and white striped fabric, giving nods to the highly juxtaposed tiled portal. The piece is a time-capsule of how Apple’s office space was designed in a different decade and remembers back to some of Apple’s early innovation and advancement…in a fun, 80’s way that contrasts highly with the Apply we know today.

Lady Podmore
WRNS Studio
Bringing life to the historical Joseph W. Podmore Building, Podmore has a distinct English flair that complements the historically and architecturally significant structure. With a brunch by day, cocktail by night concept, the space effortlessly transforms from a bright and airy lunch spot to a moody and ambient bar. A sophisticated oasis for downtown Honolulu, Podmore is deeply rooted in the building’s storied past while offering an escape from the business-oriented downtown with its extraordinary list of cocktails from a culinary lens. This dress embodies the shared heritage of the chef and Joseph W. Podmore with English nuances, such as dark rich fabrics, gold accents, and carefully fashioned details. The grandeur of the space is embraced through the volumetric qualities and dynamic movement of the dress, fabricated in a deep purple to contrast the bold green booths. Tiered skirts are layered with cream, lilac, and magenta tulle to add peeks of complementary colors and fabrics that are seen throughout the space. A statement bow constructed from the original custom wallcovering sample at the back of the dress reflects the prominent wisteria flower motif of the establishment’s feature wall. Subtle gold leaf accents on the hair and face add the final layer of luxury and refinement to a dress fit for the day and night activities of Podmore.

Taking craft as our muse, our project focused on re-interpreting traditional construction methods with a contemporary edge. Both the space and the garment express pride in craft by clearly displaying how they are built, highlighting the inherent beauty of structural expression. The mysterious figure - our protagonist - is at once classically feminine and subtly androgynous, challenging the historic masculinity of the A/E/C field and celebrating the progress made in recent years.
The project we selected–Truebeck Construction’s office in San Francisco – is a perennial favorite amongst our designers and clients.
