5 Themes for the Future
2020 has taught all of us the ease of connection to others via virtual tools. We will be carrying this forward into our office experience—anticipating easier, intuitive, and at times serendipitous connections to others. Virtual connection will be possible in almost every work experience.
5 Themes for the Future of the Office
Immersive Workplace
A workplace transformation is taking place right before our eyes. We’ve been studying what this seismic shift in the workplace means. What we’ve discovered is that in this new ecosystem where more people can work in a multitude of spaces, the office is becoming more dynamic, experiential, and valued than ever. Here are 5 themes for the future of the office:
Individual Workpoint At the individual workpoint, virtual connections will be paramount and acoustics will need to be managed.
Team Space Team spaces will be equipped with virtual displays for an “always on view” for remote team members.
Social Connection Social connections will be enhanced by virtual connection to increase inclusion and the sharing of ideas.
Touchdown Even the touchdown will need opportunities for virtual connection and sharing.
Informal Collaboration Space Sharing of information will happen seamlessly in spaces to help absorb and connect passively.
More Collaboration
Agile and Mobile
Space Shift
More human & Sustainable
As the office becomes the center of connection and culture for the organization, more group spaces will be necessary to support these connections. In the past, our connections to others were often secondary to the importance of everyone being managed and present. Now that we have learned that work happens in a variety of settings, being in the office will be more about these connections and less about being in an assigned seat for the majority of the day.
Agile & Mobile
The office will continue to evolve as working populations return. Corporate real estate is a long term investment and risk adverse. Hybrid working has added to this complexity. Managing regulations and variable demand companies are applying agile working principles. The introduction of new elements to enhance collaboration and acoustics have been flexible and mobile to support a variety of activities and ongoing space development.
More Human & Sustainable
Aesthetic, Vibe & Feel
Hybrid meetings efficiency relies on the duration of meeting and the level of collaboration required. When hosting a meeting, get prepared and ask yourself if the purpose of the meeting will be better supported on a virtual, hybrid or physical channel.
This timeline illustration shows the worst-case and best-case scenarios. We are going to see some variations as we move forward. Density will also depend upon the function of the office and the roles individuals and teams play. Call centres will continue to be at one end of the spectrum, but we are certainly seeing an evolution of even these spaces. As group teamwork and collaboration are key to productivity.
There is also an aspect of bringing the office closer to home. The adoption of underutilised retail space and adaptations are being trialled by retail banking & insurance branches. It will bring business back into the village, into the neighborhood, and into the community. Whether downsizing or through a hub and spoke model, the commercial landscape will change, hopefully revitalising the urban fringe.

Choosing Circular Materials : Oceanic Fabric
Polyester with a Purpose. Made from the SEAQUAL Initiative’s Upcycled Marine Plastic, combined with other post-consumer plastic water bottle waste from the land, SEAQUAL YARN brings to life possibilities for use in a multitude of applications with the creation of textiles. Camira uses SEAQUAL YARN to produce Oceanic, the latest in a series of recycled textile creations from the manufacturer. For every two kilograms (four meters) of Oceanic, one kilogram of waste is removed from the ocean. One meter of fabric equates to 26 plastic bottles.
Supporting Circular Business Models – a Client Case Study
The project started with the take-back of the old furniture of the European Parliament. Living up to its values of sustainability and its commitment to a circular economy. The European Parliament and Haworth chose to donate part of the furniture to 6 schools in Kenya. In partnership with the Dutch charity organization Klaartje Derks, Haworth funded and used its expertise to manage the logistics for the furniture donation.
Sustainability in People & Community
Zero Waste Journey
Haworth is committed to maintain Zero Waste to Landfill for manufacturing sites and world headquarters; to maximize material efficiency and ensure the highest value use for remaining material; and to continually reduce global waste-to-energy.

Supporting Education
Haworth India supports Children's Education Sponsoring a classroom for a new Primary school building in India. Powered by solar energy, the new building is ventilated, fully furnished & equipped with smart boards, and water supply. An additional 500 children now have access to quality education free of cost.
Supporting Biodiversity
Haworth Germany hosted a family day for members to reconnect and engage in volunteering activities to support the local community and environment. Making use of our Haworth site’s materials and member skillsets, the teams built, amongst others, five large bee-houses to provide shelter for these important insects and contribute to local biodiversity.
Carbon Accountability
Carbon accountability is an important element in Haworth's overall strategy and linked to all three key areas of our strategy. We take a holistic approach that tackles climate impacts along all steps of our value cycle and supports the 10 principles of the UN Global Compact. Our work is informed by our pledge to the business ambition for 1.5°C of the Science Based Targets initiative and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDG). We assess Scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions according to the leading GHG protocols, and report annually with CDP. Through our strategy and commitments, Haworth supports our customers in their path toward net zero carbon

Empowering members
Wadi Shawka is one of the Emirates' most incredible natural places and an important habitat for wildlife. But the ecosystem is under threat - trash is polluting the wadis and threatening nature. Our team from Dubai went on a hike through the waterway while doing a clean up of the beautiful place. Following the lead of an expert, the team also discovered hidden gems and spotted wildlife.
Honoring Diversity
We are committed to creating and sustaining a workforce that is diverse. We value the richness that diversity brings to our workforce – it makes our company better and the communities we serve stronger. Haworth is dedicated to creating and sustaining a workforce that represents many backgrounds and cultures; an environment where all members, dealers, customers and suppliers feel valued and can perform to their full potential; and where the contributions of all stakeholders are valued and respected.
Supporting Zero Waste
Haworth is committed to promote community engagement through educational opportunities and volunteerism in the communities where we operate.

GFor the refresh of LinkedIn’s MENA headquarters at Business Central Towers in Dubai, SAY Studio drew inspiration from the diverse landscape and history of the city. Through color, texture, pattern and art, they designed each floor to connect people to one another and with Dubai. It was a priority for the design team to create a community of new experiences that brings employees closer together with their teams, encourages them to explore the office, and features creative design elements that reflect the city of Dubai. The Fit-out was done by Summertown Interiors. Desks have been turned into alternative settings to promote more flexible working styles and use cases by providing a variety of options to encourage deep focus, informal collaboration and formal meetings. Bold, vibrant, graphics throughout the office are inspired by the region, and QR codes digitally share the story behind the graphics in each meeting room.
