THE MIND
Diabetes can increase the risk of depression. Feelings of anger, denial, and stress are common. Diabetes has also been linked to reduced cognitive function and Alzheimer’s disease.
Diabetes is a disease in which the body produces too little or no insulin, resulting in
increased blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia). Over time, it can affect the entire body.
Diabetes can weaken your immune system, increasing the risk of lung infections such as pneumonia and tuberculosis.
LUNGS
Diabetes increases your risk
of glaucoma, cataracts, and retinopathy.
EYES
Diabetes can delay the stomach emptying its contents (gastroparesis). Symptoms may include heartburn, nausea, and vomiting undigested food.
STOMACH
High blood sugar levels increase plaque on your teeth, which can lead to gingivitis and gum disease. Dry mouth, thrush, and a burning sensation are also risks.
MOUTH
Diabetes can damage the kidneys and limit their ability to purify the blood.
KIDNEYS
Hearing problems are more common in people with diabetes.
EARS
Having diabetes can damage
blood vessels, which increases the
risk of clogged arteries and
cholesterol buildup.
BLOOD VESSELS
2 out of 3 people with diabetes have high blood pressure. Diabetes also doubles your risk of having a heart attack or stroke.
HEART
Nearly half of those with diabetes develop nerve damage (neuropathy).
NERVES
Diabetes increases your risk of bacterial and fungal skin infections.
SKIN
Foot problems most often develop when there is nerve damage (neuropathy). Complications include foot ulcers, calluses,
blisters, and dry, cracking skin.
