How biologics work
Biologics work by inhibiting molecules in the immune system that have been linked to the development of CRSwNP. Most of these are involved in signaling cascades that activate immune cells and lead to inflammation.
By targeting these molecules, biologic therapies can interrupt disease-causing mechanisms to stop symptoms before they start, rather than just suppress symptoms once they occur.

Data has shown that more than 90% of participants (all with CRSwNP) experienced a moderate to excellent response to biologic therapy within 6 months. Changes in polyp size and frequency, as well as other CRSwNP symptoms were noted with the use of biologics.
Clinical studies for individual drugs have also found improvements in other health measures with biologic use, including sleep quality, fatigue, irritability, concentration, and productivity.
Effectiveness
In studies looking at biological treatment for CRSwNP, the most commonly reported side effects include headaches, pharyngitis, and injection-site reactions such as redness, itchiness, or pain.
Unique — but potentially serious — adverse
events can happen with different biologics.
These may include anaphylaxis, conjunctivitis, eosinophilia, or parasitic infections. These types
of side effects are rare but may require additional monitoring or treatment.
Side effects
When selecting which biologic therapy to use,
a healthcare professional may consider factors like other conditions a person has, since some
of these drugs may help treat other conditions (like asthma) as well.
Cost and previous treatment experiences may also be considered.
Choosing a biologic
Biologics for CRSwNP are administered via injection, typically in the abdomen. These injections can be done at home every 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the medication.
Some biologics may be initially given in a doctor’s office for the first couple of injections to monitor for any potential safety concerns.
