“BevMo! works with great growers and producers to build iconic brands,” says Michael Caporusso, senior director of private labels at BevMo!. “We don’t want you to like them, we want you to love them. We create wines that our shoppers are proud to share with family and include in life’s celebrations.”
We’re all looking for reasons to celebrate these days, and BevMo! has 80 of them. BevMo! took a shopper-centered approach to create brands like Unruly, winner of nine medals including Gold Best in Class for the 2019 pinot grigio and the 2019 rosé and recipient of a Double Gold, a medal that indicates consensus gold from the judges. "Come home, you coward" was Antonia Bartholomew's message to her husband Frank, a war correspondent for the United Press during WWII. This wine is our tribute to him, an expression of the best that their historic property, now ours to nurture, has to offer. This inaugural vintage is richly textured. It has a complex nose, with of notes of vanilla and sandalwood. The palate is bursting with ripe blueberry and cassis flavors, leading to a long, elegant finish.

These brand families and their line extensions offer shoppers better wine at a more competitive price. BevMo! took home awards in several different brand families including the Challis Lane, a traditional entry level wine, Unruly, a more adventurous, edgy label and an artfully tasteful and luxurious Navigator line. Athenaeum, an ultra-premium sub-appellation label was also a multiple medal winner.
This world-class exclusive brand portfolio is composed of wines produced in Napa Valley, Sonoma County, Edna Valley, and other premier wine-growing regions in California. The popularity of a specific wine often leads to an extension of the relationship with a winemaker to produce a new varietal. Unruly is one such example, a hallmark brand known for outstanding reds like the 2018 zinfandel, 2019 pinot noir, and 2018 dark blend, all Gold Medal winners in 2021. The 2019 Unruly sauvignon blanc, an extension brand, also visited the podium, taking home a Gold Best in Class.
“We figure out what the customer wants and partner with the people who do that the best to bring the most value to the shoppers,” says Caporusso. “We are extremely selective with who we choose. If we are looking for a Napa Valley sauvignon blanc, we will find award winners in the sauv blanc field to produce our wine.”
This intricate process of creating brands from infancy to fruition crosses all varietals and price points, be it the Gold Best-in-Class Long Valley Ranch chardonnay, available for $16 to $17.99, or the Gold Best-in-Class Navigator cabernet sauvignon, a Napa Valley varietal available for $39 to $41.99. Napa Valley is also the source of Athenaeum Oakville cabernet sauvignon, a Double Gold medalist that retails for $55 to $59.99. Two-for-one specials offer a great opportunity to get to know this label that tops the BevMo! exclusive brand portfolio.
“Our winemakers are delighted to create iconic brands that resonate, varietals that surprise and delight our customers,” Caporusso says. “We love to hear from consumers who will feature wines like Athenaeum Oakville and others as they begin to plan their parties and celebrations again. We are very excited about our SF Wine Competition winners in a variety of price categories.”
Winning several accolades at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition for any wine producer is worthy of recognition. BevMo!’s achievement of 80 medals speaks to the success of listening to the consumer and crafting a wine from soil to label in collaboration with esteemed winegrowers and winemakers. Given the tremendous success of this formula, one can hardly wait to see what’s next for this outstanding wine producer. Visit the BevMo! website to place your order or to find a store near you.
