Nestled between rolling foothills and the California Delta sits the LangeTwins family farm, home to five generations of Lodi wine grape farmers. For Brad and Randall Lange, founders of the LangeTwins Family Winery and Vineyards, sustainability in winemaking has became a focal point and a passion in their business practice as well as their daily lives.
Growing up on the land they still farm today, Brad and Randall Lange were well versed in the unique habitat and diverse wildlife populating the family plot. As the LangeTwins expanded their vineyard to include the River Ranch area, they began to notice that the once-vibrant ecosystem they knew as boys was vanishing before their eyes. This marked a turning point for the family owned and operated winery. From that moment on, the LangeTwins family pledged to transform their entire model, instilling a mission to craft wines using only responsible farming practices.
With sustainability at the center of their business, Brad and Randall Lange began a historic habitat restoration project in 2004, working to return the seven acres surrounded by the family ranch along the Mokelumne River back to its natural vegetative state. Rehabilitating this area, known as Sand Point, marked a crucial moment for the LangeTwins family and the principles they have adopted in their winemaking process.
Returning the land back to nature started with simple changes like nurturing oak trees, planting California natives, and building bird boxes for the local fowl including nesting wood ducks, owls, and quail. The native animal population thrived in their refreshed habitat, and Sand Point welcomed healthy populations of coyotes and their pups, deer, beaver, turtles, bobcats and more.

For the LangeTwins family, fostering sustainability is not just an exercise in good business, it’s an intergenerational promise to do no harm. Treating the land that supports and nurtures all living things with respect is a tenet of the Lange’s daily lives both inside their homes and throughout their community. In this spirit, LangeTwins works to offset its carbon footprint by replacing dated engines with efficient, clean-burning alternatives and regularly running soil tests to ensure healthy water capacity and balanced vine growth.
LangeTwins winery is proud to participate in Down to Earth Month this April, celebrating sustainable farming practices in the winemaking industry. With an eye toward the future, LangeTwins is helping to encourage the next generation of farmers and sustainable land partners by joining forces with the non-profit Center for Land-Based Learning, who’s mission is to “inspire, education, and cultivate future generations of farmers, agricultural leaders, and natural resource stewards.”
Through the Farming, Agriculture, and Resource Management Sustainability (FARMS) Leadership Program, LangeTwins invites 30 high-school students to their land to inspire, educate, and cultivate future generations of farmers, agricultural leaders, and natural resource stewards.
There is no doubt that finding time to enjoy a great glass of wine is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Whether you prefer a light crisp Pinot Grigio or a rich, fruity, full-bodied Cabernet, choosing wine from Sand Point is a decision that supports a healthier planet for generations to come.
